McLaughlin Eastshore State Park

Description

McLaughlin Eastshore State Park is a state park and wildlife refuge along the San Francisco Bay shoreline of the East Bay between the cities of Richmond, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, and Oakland. It encompasses remnant natural wetlands, restored wetlands as well as landfill west of the Eastshore Freeway. Its shoreline is 8.5mi long, and its total area is 1854acres, which includes both tidelands and uplands. Originally named just Eastshore State Park, it was renamed in October 2012 to honor Save the Bay founder Sylvia McLaughlin. Prior to 2013, it was jointly managed by the California State Parks and East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD). The state agency and EBRPD executed a 30-year agreement for EBRPD to manage the park.HistoryDuring the 1960s it became obvious that the East Shore of the San Francisco Bay was suffering from rapid commercial development and the accumulation of trash. In particular, a 72acre tract north of the Bay Bridge that extended between the cities of Emeryville and Richmond attracted the attention of commercial developers and environmental activists alike, though for different reasons. The waterfront property, primarily owned by Catellus Development Corporation—a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (Santa Fe for short)—was already worth many millions of dollars, and would be worth far more if developed with shopping centers and high-rise hotels.

That's a nice place to chill with friends for free parking, but their restrooms didn't open when I went on weekdays. Also, it's kind of windy there, but I could see the view of San Francisco, and a lot of people go sailing on the ocean.
This stop was a last minute idea as the beach we intended to go to did not allow dogs. We spent a good 45 minutes or so here walking the trail and looking out into the view couldn't get down to the actual water as there where no visible trails breaking through the brush. We did see people who had roughed it through the brush and made it to the small strip of shore. Overall 2 out of 5 the facilities building looked newer but didn't go in. Don't know if we'll actually be making an actual trip here but as a random stop here maybe definitely maybe Restrooms: Building looked promising from outside. It was clean and had any of us needed to use it, we would have tried. Dog-friendliness: Stopped here bc we had a dog. Doggo loved it. Picnic area: Clean and inviting by look.
A beautiful Bayside location with a view of all 3 bridges. Clean, safe, and with friendly squirrels who will take food from your hand! Restrooms: Sometimes they're clean.... lol Dog-friendliness: Lots of people walk their dogs here/let them off-leadh to run in 2 designated areas both fields. Dog water dish by the boat ramp shower near the Sea wall as well as by the water fountain outside the public restroom. Picnic area: Several picnic areas replete with tables/benches, grills and waste disposal. Keep it clean, people, don't ruin things for the next party who wants to enjoy a nice lil cookout!
Absolutely great vibes here. A very refreshing mood changer. Playground: Nice. Open. No hiding or hiding spots. Restrooms: Looks like the have newly rebuilt bathrooms Dog-friendliness: It's a big area. Dogs should get a mood changer in attitude as well. Picnic area: Very romantic
The best catfish sandwich you will ever taste. When comimg to this place you can order a variety of things, and having tried most of them I can tell you that the best thing is that sandwich. It goes very well with the amazing clam chowder and hot salsa they offer here.
With as populated as the Bay Area is, it can be more challenging than some might think to get a taste of nature without leaving the city. This takes me the Emeryville/Berkeley area where I had the opportunity in visiting "McLaughlin Eastshore State Park". There is no actual street address here but it is where University Ave. & W. Frontage Rd. meet. It is also about 1/2 mile from I-80 so it is quite easy to get to when traveling my car. I had come here during the evening of Saturday 6/23/2022 at around 7:45pm. The weather was a comfortable 64°F while being crystal clear with no clouds in sight as well as no Bay Area fog for that matter. What makes this state park convenient is that they offer a sizable parking lot which is free of charge as well as several trash bins and a few porta potties within a mere 50 yards from the bay water and trails. The hours of operation are from 5am to 10pm seven days a week. Since this is a protected open space preserve area, the park actually extends 8.5 miles along the East Bay shoreline from the Bay Bridge to Richmond, This includes tidelands along the waterfronts of Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley, Albany, and Richmond. Since I-80 is a very heavily traveled highway, you can witness joggers, cyclists, and walkers exercising from a distance if you look close enough. Since I arrive right before dusk to check out the sunset, I luckily parked a stones throw from the water, rocks, and sandy beach area. Since this area stretches a very long distance, it never seems super crowded as opposed to a way more densely popular park or bike trail. And if you arrive during the time I did, you can witness some of the most awesome sunsets in all of the Bay Area. With the good things about this park, you also need to consider the not-so good things as well. On any given day, you will spot quite a few homeless people in tents, sitting in cars, and even just sleeping on the streets. It is the grim reality of many that hit hard times. But for the most part, many people here are courteous and keep to themselves. I felt safe during my visit and was able to soak in some of that fresh bay air while enjoying a perfect sunset. With that said and done, I am going to give "McLaughlin Eastshore State Park" an above average four-star rating.
Beautiful bay views and improved pathways make it a great place for a jog or walk. Restrooms are available in a paved parking area close to the Sea Breeze café south of University Avenue.
Peaceful place to view the bridge and city.
This park is good for strolling, observation and views. It does not really have a beach, but the meadow restoration has made it good for birdwatching, and it has flat terrain so that it's an easy hike. I found the scenery beautiful, and saw some good birds while I was there, and some water birds. It was a pleasant experience.
Great views of both the Bay and Golden gate bridge on a clear day! There are some homeless folks every once and awhile but they are harmless. Nice spot to go for a run along the water or to fly a kite. Also a dog park near.
