McLean County Courthouse and Square

Description

The McLean County Courthouse and Square is located in downtown Bloomington, Illinois. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places and encompasses the old McLean County Courthouse and the courthouse-facing sides of three downtown blocks. All 4 floors of the building are now occupied by the McLean County Museum of History for exhibits, collections storage, and offices. The historic buildings at the other side of the square were destroyed by fire in the 1980s. The Square is bordered by four Bloomington streets: Main Street, Center Street, Jefferson Street and Washington Street. The site was home to three previous courthouses before the current one was completed in 1903. The first courthouse at the site was built in 1831, and the second in 1836. The third was built in 1868, but suffered major damage from fire on June 19, 1900.HistoryCourthouseThe McLean County Courthouse housed the McLean County Circuit Court from 1903 to 1976. The original construction was completed in 1868 at a cost of $461,640. On June 19, 1900, a fire destroyed many of the buildings in the square and the courthouse. The courthouse was rebuilt in 1903 in a similar style following the fire. It was designed by William Reeves and John M. Baile of the Peoria firm Reeves and Baile. The rebuild of many buildings in the downtown was executed through the designs of several local architects, George Miller, Paul Moratz and A.L. Pillsbury. In 1988, the McLean County Historical Society moved to put its museum in the Old Courthouse. Today the museum operates out of the courthouse building as it has since 1991. Until 1991, general county offices were still housed in the courthouse though the courts had moved to new facilities a few blocks away. In 2002 McLean County approved $1.2 million for renovation following a historic structures report. Other funding came through a Public Museum Capital Grant from the Illinois State Museum, a division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The project included restoration of the 100-year-old courthouse dome. Original copper was salvaged and reused and the clock restored to working order. On December 24, 2004 the tower bell was rang for the first time in nearly fifty years. The dome was restored from its oxidized copper green to the original copper color.

If I could give no stars I would! I searched them out once my life was at a point I could afford to take care of this and initiated a monthly payment. When I did that I asked if I get into financial problems is there an option to pause. The lady assured me they would understand and work with me. That was FALSE! When I told them we were having a hard time with the cost of everything and a family member going into a nursing home that I care for they threatened me and now they harass me daily. All it took was for them to say okay call us back when you’re back to normal JUST LIKE I DID the first time but no. They were rude and nasty on the phone and couldn’t care less! Absolutely awful!
People here were amazing! The way the officers gentley put the cuffs on while staring me inthe eyes and smiling was perfect! Even the C.Officers were great at their roles, you can tell they love their job with how great and amazing they treat inmates. Who's working in the kitchen? Talk about 5 star deliciousness, it's not delivery, its prisonio.
Sent a notice of a fee to an irrelevant address when they have my current address. Which can result in a fine.. unprofessional McClean. And sloppy.
It's government. What else do you expect. They want to enforce policies for others but not themselves. They won't let you have a phone in there. Dumbest thing ever. If its good for the goose it's good for the gander. Stop being hypocrites
Judge Eves could care less about your safety. If you need an OP go to Champaign county.
I hate coming to this place but as far as how the court operates it's a regular courthouse. I went through the toughest legal battle of my life and the judge gave me a chance to speak when he didn't have to so me as a minority & woman ,I felt a sense of justice real justice and in my community this is uncommon. I am not rich and I also don't walk around with my nose in the air like I'm entitled because I'm not. These other reviewers seem to be the same person. I'm a real person with real experience and I'm telling you that this courthouse is regular from the guards to the judges to the Janitor's.
Very nice building staff seems helpful can't bring lighters in building and other metals & can not bring cell phones in building
Highly recommend you don’t file anything here without a solid attorney. In my opinion, this place is too harsh on low income individuals and domestic victims. There’s a reason this is probably the lowest rated courthouse you’ve ever seen.
Rude is the word. Funny how public servants whose pay check come from tax payers treat those same folks with such low regard... sad.
This place is so crooked! If you want to take anything to trial they will charge you about $400 in court fees. And I am talking about something small like a seat belt ticket. They do this so you will plead guilty to anything! How do they get away with this?
