Mercer House

Description

The Mercer House, now called the Mercer-Williams House Museum, is located at 429 Bull Street and stands at the southwestern end of Monterey Square, in Savannah, Georgia. The house was the scene of the shooting death of Jim Williams' assistant, Danny Hansford, a story that is retold in the 1994 John Berendt book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The house is currently owned by Dorothy Kingery, Williams' sister, and is open to the public for tours.HistoryDesigned by John S. Norris for General Hugh Weedon Mercer (great-grandfather of the songwriter Johnny Mercer) construction of the house began in 1860. Construction was interrupted by the American Civil War, and finally completed around 1868 by the new owner, John Wilder. For a period in the twentieth century, the building was used as the Savannah Shriners Alee Temple. It then lay vacant for a decade until in 1969 when Jim Williams, one of Savannah’s earliest and most dedicated private restorationists, bought the house and restored it.Before Hansford's death, as retold in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the house had already been the scene of two deaths. In 1913 a previous owner tripped over the second floor banister, fractured his hip, and suffered a concussion, dying three days later. In 1969, a boy chasing pigeons on the roof fell over the edge and impaled himself on the iron fence below.

The Mercer-Williams House Museum made famous by the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," is a lovely home designed by a NY architect and completed in 1868. Sadly, no one from the Mercer family ever lived there; however, Jim Williams purchased the home in 1969 and began a two-year restoration. The Williams family still owns the home and live there. The incredible first floor and garden are open to the public for tours; however, photos are prohibited. Most of the furniture and art were part of Williams' private collection. He was a master restorer and is credited with saving more than 50 houses in the area.
Thank you Zack for a great tour! This is a beautiful home filled with amazing art and antiquities and a rich history behind the sorties of this home. Mr. Williams leaves quite a legacy to the people of Savannah!Visited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$21–30
On our last trip to Savannah we toured several museums, and the Mercer Williams House was by far our favorite. Our tour guide was amazing, he was very knowledgeable and I have to say I left with a great wealth of knowledge for the home, the family, and the history of the area.
The first time we tried this tour was many years ago. We had our daughter with us and she was under two years old at the time. Like many others with children who have attempted to take this tour in the past, we were asked to leave because she made a noise. However, my wife was determined to take this tour and she was finally able to walk through, yesterday. My daughter, who is now a teenager was right along with us. Fortunately, she didn’t make a peep this time. It was an interesting tour and our guide was friendly and informative. My wife loved everything about it. However, I was there too and this is my review. The tickets are a little pricey, considering the fact that you don’t actually get to tour the home. Just a few rooms downstairs. Nothing upstairs, no workshop in the basement, no kitchen. You aren’t allowed to take pictures inside of the home which my wife would have loved and there was only a brief mention of the story behind “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil” which is what made this home such a huge attraction for many of its visitors. It’s undoubtedly a beautiful old home and it has a very interesting history. But the short tour through a few rooms really isn’t worth the ticket price in my opinion. Finally, I’m not sure what their policy is when it comes to children these days. But I would definitely check with them before making a reservation for the tour if you plan to bring small children.
Super cool historical home. I loved seeing a painting by the same artist who painted George Washington on the US dollar bill. 7 and under are free for anyone out there with "older looking" 7 year olds. No photos allowed in the house but I did get a pic of this cool vase in the gift shop. Gift shop is located in the carriage house before you enter the tour. Lots of cute items, albeit pricey. Ultimate "old money" feel.
Must see tour. This house is amazing inside. Guides are very knowledgeable about the history and each item in the home. No pics allowed inside. Cute little gift shop tooVisited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
Wonderful tour! Blair did an excellent job of explaining about the house and its history. Went at a good speed. Only negative is the same spot you purchase tickets is in the tightly packed gift shop register line. It would be nice to have separate lines.Visited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedYes
If you're a fan of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil this is a must see when you visit Savannah. Only about $14 for a 40 minute tour of the gardens and house. Grady was a delightful tour guide and just being in the house where events unfolded was cool. Not as big or magnificent as you would imagine from the film and you don't go upstairs. Great pictures and antiques. You cannot take any pix or video during any part of the tour. Me? Loved it. You will too, Sport.
My dad and I toured the Mercer Williams home and we agreed that our tour guide was the best tour guide we've ever had. He was so friendly, informative and a good story teller.
Loved this tour! We had Grady as our tour guide and he was so knowledgeable and all around interesting to listen to. The house is beautiful and hearing the history is cool. You are not allowed to take photos which I personally was okay because the tour was so interesting. Also, they offer military and student discounts which is a plus!
