This was a great stop in Tucumcari! The museum is really interesting on the inside even if the outside area doesn’t look like much. It’s staffed by students from the local college and many of the local artifacts are found by them. They have examples from all over the world. Also, the front desk staff happily looked after Duncan so I didn’t have to wait outside with him. It wasn’t on my Route 66 sites list, but was an add-on that was totally worth it!
Super surprising museum. We were skeptical because of the neighborhood, but this is a well done museum. We travel cross country almost twice a year and have visited many many many museums. Staff was very friendly and professional, the gift shop is very educationally stocked with gems/coloring books/informational books/building kits/lifelike dinosaur action figures/games/ tshirts/stuffed animals and more, boxed water sold as well . Bathrooms are very clean, smelled good and stocked. Museum itself is carpet and well lit to display the exhibits appropriately. The exhibits range from natural rocks, fossilized trees and shells, dinosaur bones, dioramas, viewing area of the lab where techs work, kids play area with coloring station, dig site with shovels and bones in crushed walnuts, and a Dino with a saddle to sit on too. There was a lot to see. You can make this a quick trip and walk through to stretch your legs and the kids run or take your time and take in all the information available on each exhibit. This is a kid friendly place where the kids can have fun. They have to be supervised so they don't go into the dioramas, but there is plenty to touch. We made a fun game where the kids had to find the green go hand to touch something. All in all a great value and quick stop off the freeway. We took less than hour and took our time without reading every sign.
This has got to be the best middle-sized museum on dinosaurs I have visited. The layout is superb, with every geological period outlined with conditions and animals present during the period. What is unique is the ability to touch different fossilized pieces while viewing the scene they came from. There is a children's section where kids can get hands-on action. You can also view students at work uncovering and cleaning new pieces for the exhibits. Their gift shop is expansive and reasonably priced. The staff are professional and helpful. Many pieces came from private collections and you can read about the experiences in uncovering them. All in all, a must see on any visit to Tucumcari.
Very nice museum with a lot of history of dinosaurs and the like. Very clean and well laid out. Cute dig area for the kids as well as a cute gift shop with some reasonably priced items and really cute T-shirts. A fun way to pass the time while we waited to check in to our hotel. Very friendly staff as well. Overall a great place to visit while in the area.
It turns out the museum is not half bad, with the world’s largest collection of life-sized bronze skeletons and fossils on display. Because it’s also a natural sciences lab run by Mesalands Community College, legitimate scholarship is behind the exhibits, which you can tell by the professional presentation.
A wonderful surprise stop for our road trip! The building was clean and well-kept, and the staff was helpful. Definitely worth visiting.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
