Metamora Crossroads Historic District

Description

The Metamora Crossroads Historic District is a historic district centered at the intersection of Oak and High Street in the small village of Metamora in Metamora Township in Lapeer County, Michigan. It was designated as a Michigan State Historic Site and also added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 19, 1984.The historic district comprises 3.5 acres (1.4 hectares) and 15 buildings and one non-contributing property. These structures consist of various functions and architecture, including Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, and Italianate architecture. Most of the buildings were built between 1850–1910, and several of them still retain their original purpose. The White Horse Inn, located at 1 East High Street, is promoted as Michigan's oldest continually running restaurant since first opening in 1850. Founded in 1838, Metamora itself served as a pioneer way station for travelers and grew to become the center of the township's prosperity. Development of this core area ceased prior to World War I, preserving the early architecture.
