MicroSociety Academy Charter School opened our K-8 tuition-free public charter school SEPTEMBER 8, 2015. See updates here on FB & www.macsnh.org
The MicroSociety* Academy Charter School (MACS) founders strongly believe that a tuition-free public K-8 MicroSociety School will better prepare our children for college, post high school education, and the 21st Century workplace. The curriculum will meet all state and local standards using innovative, engaging, research-based, technology-infused instructional strategies that have proven successful throughout the US and the world.
Students in our MicroSociety Academy will receive standards-based instruction that is enhanced with "real world" and STEM concepts. They will be given the opportunity during a daily MicroSociety period to apply their classroom learning by reporting to their job and working in their own MicroSociety. Students will actively participate in creating and operating their own small society with guidance of teacher facilitators. MicroSociety will have its own currency, bank, market place with student-made goods, restaurant, newspapers, publications, a government with a legislature, a court system with lawyers, judges and "peace patrol" and more!
Lessons learned in the classroom will come alive for students when they are immediately put into practice in this miniature real-world environment inside their school. Collaboration with local community partners will also allow the application of lessons to extend outside the school and the MicroSociety, via community presenters/mentors, field trips, internships, and community projects.
Graduates of MicroSociety Schools typically have a stronger economic foundation and better understanding of the intricacies of the work world and being a productive member of a democratic society. Some of our planning team members and supporters are graduates, family members of graduates, or past faculty members of the first successful K-8 MicroSociety school-wide program pioneered at the City Magnet School in Lowell, MA. We are passionate about bringing MicroSociety to the Greater-Nashua area because our group knows first-hand how children and our community will benefit.
*MicroSociety is a legally trademarked name. MACS has been granted permission from the trademark owner, MicroSociety, Inc. in Philadelphia, PA (www.microsociety.org) to use the name for our Charter School.
Our volunteer group of parents and educators immediate goals are:
--To build parent and community interest in opening a K-8 MicroSociety Academy Charter School in Greater-Nashua area that will service students from Nashua, Merrimack, Hollis, Brookline, Milford, Hudson, Windham, Pelham and from throughout New Hampshire.
--To network with community members and individuals who are interested in becoming local Community Partners on a Board of Advisors (on call), Board of Directors (up to 3 yr. term) and/or School-Community Mentors & Resource People.
--To seek approval from the NH State Board of Education to open a Charter School in Fall, 2015.
--To establish a solid foundation for the Board, Staff, Students and Parents to successfully open our school doors to our initial cohort of 120 K-5 students SEPTEMBER 8, 2015. An additional grade will be added over the following three successive years until our school reaches a capacity of 180 K-8 students.
High achieving students that are fully prepared to face the challenges of post HS education, college and a 21st Century workforce with a strong understanding of our economic underpinnings and the intricacies of living in a productive democratic society.
