Why Middlebury?
Before the first Earth Day, Middlebury was teaching environmental studies. We innovated a liberal arts approach that explores the connections between the natural world and the human enterprise.
We know that environmental progress requires leadership, not just knowledge. Middlebury has helped numerous students discover and build their leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills through its MiddCORE enterpreneurial program. Over six weeks, you’ll fully engage in developing these skills and combine them with new scientific abilities and hands-on project experience.
At Middlebury, we have 100 years of experience in summer immersion programs. Our Language Schools and Bread Loaf School of English are world renowned for faculty and pedagogy, quality of experience, and life-changing results.

Our Location
Middlebury’s campus lies in Vermont’s Champlain Valley. The valley features small towns, working farms and forests, and borders the vast Green Mountain National Forest. Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, is an hour away. Lake Champlain, the sixth largest lake in the U.S., forms the western edge of Vermont and the valley, and is fed by many local rivers and waterways. Just across Lake Champlain lie the Adirondack Mountains' millions of acres of protected forests and lakes.
Our Facilities
The R/V Folger: Middlebury’s new research vessel is equipped for diverse scientific explorations in and along Lake Champlain.
McCardell Bicentennial Hall: Our science building features modern laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment more often found in major research universities.
Our community: Middlebury College has developed long-term partnerships with towns, residents, farms, businesses, and government agencies throughout the Champlain Valley and the state. Our neighbors know that Middlebury professors and students will work with them effectively to gather information they need and help create changes they want.
