Maternal and Infant Health
Maternal Infant Health Canada (MIH Can) is comprised of doctors, researchers and others from Canada, India and around the world working to improve maternal and infant well-being and reduce maternal and infant mortality in India
The birth of a child should be one of the happiest times in a family's life. But for too many families in India, the joy of welcoming a new baby is cut short. With more than 3.5 million babies born prematurely each year, India has one of the world's highest maternal and infant mortality rates. UBC is committed to tackling the most dire health problems facing women and children around the world. Dr. Farah Shroff established MIH to do exactly that, by reducing infant deaths from preventable causes in Odisha, a state with one of India's highest rates of maternal and infant death. The MIH Can team includes collaborators from UBC and across Canada and India, with expertise in global maternal-infant health research, clinical care, and community development. MIH Can is working with communities to implement several evidence-based strategies for improving maternal and infant well-being. Together, over five years, these interventions will prevent the deaths of 5,232 children in Odisha and help thousands more children get a healthy start at life. UBC would be pleased to work with donors to define tailored opportunities for recognition.
