Milford Cemetery Association wishes to express appreciation to those who have not waited for this newsletter to send their contributions toward upkeep of the grounds and to those of you who will send your gifts upon receipt of this letter. Thank you for your faithful support of a very worthy cause.
Derek Cunningham continues to oversee the maintenance of the grounds. He does an excellent job even though we had to ask him to cut back on his hours this winter because of limited funds.
For those of you who are new recipients of our newsletter, Angie Knott has cataloged every individual whose stone could be read (over 2800). Each is entered on line at www.findagrave.com, scroll to ‘search for a cemetery’, fill out the location information and find your ancestor buried in Milford Cemetery. You can enter a picture of your loved one if you wish. Press edit on right hand side of screen to send an email to Angie with additions and corrections.
Each year we find some who have been faithful contributors have passed away. If you would send names and addresses of your own family members, who would like to know that the resting place of their loved ones are well kept and serene, those names and addresses will be added to our mailing list.
Before writing this year’s note, I spent some time looking back over newsletters written before 1999. Many interesting things came to my attention. For example in 1984, Viola Littlejohn, then secretary wrote about restoration of the old silver bridge between the sections of the cemetery. That bridge is now slipping downward and we requested our county inspector to take a look at it to make sure its safe and what if necessary can be done to repair it. I guess we can’t expect repairs to last forever. Also written in 1963 D.C. Tyler reported $2100.00 was spent that year for salary of one caretaker to maintain the cemetery. We now spend that amount each month, and often in the spring and summer.
We have a new section opened for site purchase called Rock Hill Garden. There is now a gravel road to reach this new section that is washing away. I do hope we will be able to address this improvement need soon with new gravel or asphalt.
Many of you care about the historic value of Milford Cemetery, where not only your loved ones are buried, but veterans who fought in every war we as a country were involved in to keep this nation free. Let us continue to support this worthy cause. Please send your contribution to:
