The full MBSR program is eight weeks long. (There is a prior two hour free introductory session). Participants meet for 2.5 hours once a week and there is an all-day session in the 6th week. Participants practice with a 30 minute CD daily (mindfulness meditation or mindful yoga) and are encouraged to read the course text: Full Catastrophe Living, by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.
Course Content: The course includes three components:
* Experiential, periods of mindful movement (yoga, qi gong, walking meditation)
*Didactic, through lecture, participants learn how habitual reactions to stress create anxiety, depression, fear, anger and possibly illness. We will learn how to change our responses.
* Group Discussion, the last component, will allow for personal sharing and questions. Each participant will have an opportunity to discuss their learnings from the workshop and home practice.
Course Objectives: • To improve participants’ and health professionals’ ability to live more skillfully with stress and related conditions both within themselves and with their families/co-workers/patients, etc. • To improve participants’ ability to live and cope with chronic pain, illness and stress related conditions. • To become more responsible and active in the management of their health. • To decrease, if appropriate and possible, the use of prescription and non-prescription medications. •To understand the physiology of meditation and the “relaxation/mindfulness response.” • To learn the physiologic, psychological and clinical benefits of meditation. • To experience non-judgmental, moment to moment awareness, of the relationship between the body and mind.• Health professionals will learn stress reduction skills to help patients and their families better manage stress, fear, anger, anxiety, and depression that are related to illness.
