The Mitchellville Public Library has set forth the following goals and objectives to provide a direction for public library service.
1. To meet the informational needs of all.
2. To facilitate informal self-education of all people in the area.
3. To enrich and further develop the library as an educational resource for the community.
4. To encourage wholesome recreation and the constructive use of leisure time.
5. To provide a library staff that is knowledgeable, helpful and sensitive to the needs of library users.
The Mitchellville Public Library provides physical and virtual spaces that welcome and encourage patrons of all ages to engage in lifelong learning.
We uphold the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association, have internet use policies, and have guidelines for the safe and positive experiences of children in the library such as:
1. A child is expected to abide by the Library's Service Policy.
2. The Library is not responsible for the actions, supervision, or safety of a child or for guiding or monitoring a child's use of the Library.
3. A child 8 years of age or younger must be attended and supervised by a caregiver at all times. A caregiver must be 14 years of age or older.
4. Library Staff will attempt to contact a child's caregiver if:
-a child 8 years of age or younger is in the Library unattended.
-a child under 14 years of age is in the Library unattended at the time of closing.
5. If a caregiver cannot be reached within 15 minutes, Library staff will notify the Mitchellville Police Department. Library staff will remain with the child until a caregiver or police arrive.
The Mitchellville Public Library encourages children to experience the collections, services, and programs it offers. The above guidelines ensure their use of the Library is a positive and safe experience.
