The Modesto Police Dept. Explorer Post #219 is a program for motivated individuals 16-20 years old wanting to explore a career in law enforcement.
The Modesto Police Department Explorer Post #219 was chartered with the Boy Scouts of America in 1967. It is one of the oldest law enforcement exploring posts in the Central Valley.
The Modesto Police Department Explorer Post is a volunteer organization through which young people, ages 16 to 20, are trained in various aspects of law enforcement. The primary goal of the explorer program is to prepare young adults for a future career in law enforcement. Explorers also participate in many events, including, but not limited to, the Modesto Marathon, the Fourth of July Parade, X-Fest, National Night Out, the Veterans Day Parade, and the Celebration of Lights Parade.
In addition to community service, explorers regularly train in many areas of law enforcement. Training such as traffic stops, search and seizure, effective communication, and the law enforcement code of ethics, help prepare explorers for a successful career in law enforcement.
Explorers have the opportunity to participate in ride alongs with full time police officers. Depending on their level of experience, explorers have the opportunity to utilize the police computer, as well as the police radio. Explorers are encouraged to assist officers in completing reports and other paperwork. It is through ride alongs that explorers learn the most about the law enforcement profession.
Police explorers are considered non-sworn civilian volunteers.
