Moments of Hope Outreach is a 501(c)(3) all-volunteer outreach that gives Hope to neighbors experiencing homelessness and those living in poverty in the Richmond area by providing weekly healthy meals, life-sustaining supplies, and connecting them with local, state, and federal health, housing and employment resources. We've helped 17 people get housed and end their homeless nightmare in the last 20 months.
Our weekly Saturday Servings events are held at two locations, and provide delicious healthy meals prepared and served by local businesses, civic groups and churches; over 3000 meals served so far this year! We also provide a day's supply of canned food, a week's supply of toiletries, as well as clothing, refurbished bicycles, health screenings, fellowship and prayer to 100-150 individuals and families weekly.
During the week, we visit camps to provide tents, sleeping bags, heaters, and other supplies, and check on the wellbeing of our friends experiencing homelessness.
We currently distribute 150 bags of toiletries each week between our two serving locations. We also provide feminine hygiene items separately. Each bag is stuffed with a roll of toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, lip balm, shampoo, soap, deodorant, and a razor.; none of which can be paid for using SNAP/food stamps. Because we buy in bulk, our cost per bag is $2.12. We're currently spending $350 each week. By providing these items, we're making it possible for those we serve to have more money for food and rent.
What if I viewed each person holding a cardboard sign or an empty cup as someone else’s angel waiting to be released by a stranger’s agape love? What if I seized opportunities to create Moments of Hope at these chance encounters like at intersections or elsewhere? What if I proactively collected a few items like gloves and gift cards to have on hand for these chance encounters? What if I truly unleashed my creativity and passion on this? What if you did too? What if two friends became a community…became a movement? How many hearts will we touch?
