Monks’ Bread has been baking delicious, wholesome, premium quality sliced bread and a variety of Specialty foods for over 60 years.
The year 1951 was a year of hope in a world of post-war peace. A group of visionary men left Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky with a dream. In the Genesee Valley at the western boundary of the Finger Lakes wine country of New York, they would build a place of spiritual discovery and blessing — The Abbey of the Genesee.
Brother Sylvester, the baker of the first loaf of Monks’ Bread, delighted in sharing a loaf of the bread from the kitchen of the Abbey of the Genesee with guests who came to visit the monks. The word began to spread across Western New York State about this wholesome delicious bread and a bakery was born. Since 1953, a commitment to baking wholesome goodness in every loaf has been our joy. We are delighted to share a slice of tasty Monks’ Bread “From Our Hands to Yours!”
For 900 years, Trappist monks have lived a quiet life of prayer supporting their communities by the work of their hands. In modern times, Trappist monasteries worldwide most often earn their living as food and beverage manufacturers. From the famous beer brewers of Europe, to the dairies of Asia, and in the bakeries, farms, and confectioners in America-the Trappist tradition of wholesome goodness continues to delight people across the globe.
