Montgomery Field

Description

Montgomery - Gibbs Executive Airport is a public airport in San Diego, California, United States, six miles (10 km) north of downtown San Diego. The airport covers 456acre and has three runways, one public and two private helipads. The runways are 28 Right/10 Left-28 Left/10 Right parallels and 5/23.OverviewThe field was named for John J. Montgomery, an aviation pioneer who in 1884-1886 made the first manned, controlled, heavier-than-air flights in the United States from Otay Mesa south of San Diego starting with a glider designed in 1883. and for William Gibbs 1910-2016 who founded the airport in 1940. Montgomery - Gibbs Executive Airport is one of the nation's busiest airports for small aircraft and has a number of flying clubs, flight schools, plus business turboprops and jets based there. The San Diego Fire Department bases aircraft there. King Schools, Inc. is based nearby and its aircraft are based at the airport. Since summer 2009, King Schools (in conjunction with Cessna) has been flight-testing the prototype Cessna 162 Skycatcher Light-Sport Aircraft at or around the airport. The airport was renamed Montgomery - Gibbs Executive Airport in 2016HistoryThe airport opened in July 1940 as "Gibbs Field" as an all-way clay and gravel surface airfield. During World War II, control of the airport was assumed by the United States Army Air Forces, which built three hard runways. It was called "Gibbs Auxiliary Field" and used as a support airfield for the contractor pilot school at Ryan Field, near Hemet. It also supported training activities at the United States Army Desert Training Center (DTC) in the Mojave Desert, and later as an auxiliary airfield for Lindbergh Field in San Diego. It was used presumably as an overflow airfield to store newly manufactured B-24 Liberator bombers and PBY Catalina amphibian aircraft made by Consolidated Aircraft.

First time riding in a single engine plane. We came here to ride with a friend’s son who had just obtained his pilot license. This is an awesome airfield. Getting here was easy and the parking was even more convenient. Getting into the airport was a breeze as our friend is a flying club member with access code to the airfield. Once we were inside, our friend led us to the assigned plane for the ride. After pre-flight check, a jet fuel truck was called to refuel the plane. When all safety checks were done, we got on the plane and strapped on the seatbelts. Our friend’s son then started his check list for starting the plane. Once the engine’s started, we taxied to the runway. This airport has a lot of fly hobbyists here on this nice day. It was not too busy when we took off. Once we got on the runway, we were cleared to take off in a couple of minutes. The take off was very smooth with our Cessna and the feeling assenting into the San Diego sky was amazing. The altitude was only around 1200 feet and then descended to 500 feet into the Bay Area sky. Seeing La Jolla Shore and Sunset Cliff from the sky was spectacular. We filmed the strong waves hitting the shores and took many photos of the beaches and buildings below. This was our first time seeing San Diego from the sky above and gave us a great appreciate of the greatness of this city. After circling around the Bay Area and then crossed the Coronado bridge, we headed back to Montgomery Executive Airfield by going over the San Diego Airport. The landing was also very smooth. Since landed during sunset, we stayed a bit longer after our ride and got to see all the great planes parked in this airport. Today’s ride was great accompanied with perfect weather. Thanks to our friend for arranging this unforgettable airplane ride experience.
After hours the pilots start OCDing. Circling the airport endlessly. They land and takeoff as an excuse to be able to fly at barely 500 feet at slow speeds which are noisier. All the legit cessnas stop flying around 8pm. Wondering why you hear and see low flying planes in your area of kearney Mesa til midnight? Round and round they go. Maybe tweekers?
KMYF is the home airport to Mia Noi. It is a small, friendly airport - yet one of the busiest GA airports. The main FBOs are Crownair and Coast. Fuel is not cheap, but then again this airport is close to the heart of San Diego with great access to the I-15 and 163.
Awesome airport, with lots of history. They stored newly built B-24s here back in WW2 before sending them to the war, back when it was called Gibbs Auxiliary Field. I used to come here as a kid, and I still like to park in the lot near the entrance on my lunch break and watch planes takeoff and land.
Noisy little planes flying all day, making the whole neighborhood miserable. Stop ruthless noise pollution in San Diego!!!
Awesome airport, awesome people, great planes, great clubs. All around a great aviation hub.
The planes are dropping lead on all the residents in the area and small children at the schools around here. This should not be allowed near residential areas. This airport needs to either close or change their fuel to clean energy. The noise is obnoxious too.
It's an experience of a lifetime! Took my wife on our 17th anniversary for a tour of San Diego! It's was an experience of a lifetime! That's where we were married! Carlton Hills Country Club!
Very nice airport to fly in and go out to the west coast for surfing or to the east for hiking.
Finished my PPL training here. Great ATC
