Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve

Description

Montgomery Woods State Natural Reserve is a 1,323-acre state-owned park located in the Coastal Range in Mendocino County, California, United States. The Reserve occupies the headwaters of Montgomery Creek, a tributary of Big River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean at Mendocino Headlands State Park. The virgin groves of Coast Redwood in Montgomery Woods are examples of a now rare upland riparian meadow habitat; most other preserved redwood groves are on broad alluvial plains. The Reserve is accessed from a parking area along Orr Springs Road 13 miles west of Ukiah, California, or 15 miles east of Comptche, California. A moderately steep trail from the parking area climbs uphill along Montgomery Creek about three-quarters of a mile. Once in the grove, the trail makes a meandering three mile loop, with substantial use of boardwalks to protect the fragile forest floor. The reserve was initiated by a 9-acre donation from Robert Orr in 1945, with 765 acres donated since 1947 by the Save the Redwoods League.Between December 1996 and August 2000, the tallest tree in Montgomery Woods, named the Mendocino Tree, was the world's tallest known tree. It was displaced by the discovery of a number of taller trees in Humboldt Redwoods State Park and later Redwood National Park in Humboldt County. The tree is one of dozens of similar height in the grove, and was never specifically marked in order to protect the tree. Earlier well-publicized candidates for the world's tallest tree suffered damage from stresses resulting from crowds of tourists.

Only a short, and beautiful, drive west of Ukiah. The area of the reserve south of the Orr Springs Road is the more popular section. The area to the north of Orr Springs is also amazing. There is a tiny and slightly hidden parking area just before you reach the main parking area. Look to the right hand side of the road, if your traveling west.
Beautiful hike, not too strenuous. No dogs allowed on the trail, 1 bathroom at parking lot. Took about 1.5 hours to do the entire loop
This is an awesome place to see some big redwoods not too far from Ukiah. The hiking loop is well maintained by the forest service, and it's not too difficult to hike, but it has a couple of steep parts. You will want to bring water and bug spray. The walk is very senic with a small stream, large redwoods, and paches of ferns. I would say it's a worthwhile visit! Restrooms: There is a bathroom at the parking lot of the trailhead
I was pleasantly surprised to find such a gorgeous protected pocket of redwoods in this area. It's great for a family hike people with varied hiking abilities. The trail is an easy loop with the exception of the first 0.25 miles which is an incline. There are many native plants species, giant trees, and plenty of shade. Watch out for poison oak! There's tons of it. Picnic area: 1 picnic table in shade at trailhead
Beautiful section of old growth redwoods. Plenty of space to hang out for the day and enjoy the smell of redwoods. First time going back in 10 years and it still feels rather untouched. Restrooms: Restrooms located near trailhead Picnic area: Benches near trailhead
It took us 1 hour and 20 minutes to do the 2 mile hike. That long to take pictures and just take in how amazing the redwood trees and forest floor is. The stream was running in mid June. There is bathroom with no water at the parking lot. There are 3 picnic tables. Dogs are not allowed on the trail.
We went on a Monday before closing for a short hike and didn't run into a soul. It was beautiful and the winding road to the park was a fun twisty ride. Though it is on a very narrow path.
The hike into the old growth grove has a lot of uphill climb, but definitely worth it. Well maintained trails and picnic areas near the entrance. Look forward to going here regularly. Picnic area: Picnic tables and a nice deck adjacent to the parking lot and a few more tables up the creek a bit.
We have heard many good things about Montgomery Woods. Yes, the redwoods are beautiful. This particular forest was nearly one-third destroyed by fire a little more than 10 years ago. The forest and ground cover are quite resilient. Parking is a bit limited. And, it is a good uphill walk. Then, there's the mosquitoes. All good walking shoes, a bottle of water, and some bug repellent can solve. Why go visit? Well, the redwoods are beautiful and the forest is peaceful.
If you're in the area and don't want to drive up to Humboldt, this is a great place to see some of the first generation growths. There is a tree we seen that is hollow as far up as you can see! It is incredible. A very special place.
