RUN/WALK DETAILS:

The course was designed by the City of Moorpark and the Race Director and Moorpark Rotarian, Matt Miguelena. Matt has 20 years of experience racing various events both nationally and internationally. The 5K and 10K course have recently been sanctioned by the USA Track and Field Association. This is mainly an “off road” course which starts at the Moorpark Highlands Park then uses the natural topography, landscape, and elevation changes in the scenic park area. It boasts beautiful vistas and challenging terrain. There will be timing chips for each runner plus participant and top 3 placing awards in each age category. The event will also include music, dancing, warm up stretches, yoga, and giveaways. Each registrant will receive a goodie bag, free fitted athletic T-shirt, and one free raffle ticket.

THE MOORPARK MAMMOTH STORY:

The Moorpark Mammoth, which is a Southern Mammoth (Mammuthus meridionalis), was the first species of mammoth to enter North America across the Bering land bridge from eastern Asia as early as 1.8 million years ago. When it was alive, this behemoth would have stood 12-feet tall with 8-foot long tusks. In April 2005, the Moorpark Southern Mammoth was discovered and excavated during the construction of the Meridian Hills housing development north of downtown Moorpark. Since the discovery of the Moorpark Southern Mammoth is an extraordinary find, the City of Moorpark wanted to find a place to keep the fossils safe, but also accessible to the community. In July 2007, the City of Moorpark entered into an agreement which transferred ownership of this fossil assemblage to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.
