The school's mascot is the Thunderbird. it is not to be confused with Tahoma Senior High SchoolHistoryMount Tahoma opened its doors in the South Tacoma neighborhood in 1961. It is named after the Native American name for Mount Rainier. The school was built by a California contractor in the 1960s and wasn't very accommodating for its Washington students. The original school layout consisted of three open air courtyards, with a college style open campus. Frequently, students carried parkas or umbrellas from class to class. 2004 was the last year that students would be in the original Mount Tahoma building. Students and staff moved to the new building, which fit more with the Pacific Northwest weather.New BuildingBuilt in 1961, the setting of Mount Tahoma High School drastically changed in September 2004. The school is located on 74th Street and overlooks Mount Rainier (which is the namesake for Mt. Tahoma.) The new campus features 93 teaching spaces, including 81 classrooms, eight technology labs, wireless networking throughout the building, a 600-seat performance arts theatre, two gymnasiums, a pool, weight room, aerobics room, athletic fields and a 3,500 seat stadium. The offices are located in the front of the main entrance and are connected to the large 900-seat commons. There are 9 science classrooms with a 90-foot greenhouse and nursery. Mount Tahoma's counseling center is the hub of career activities, which enable students to access college information and career opportunities.

What makes a school is the teachers and the office staff. Look at the test scores on the Washington State Education website, when compared to other schools in the atrea, it's the worst for high schools. However the look of the school is exceptional. My first experience with the Attendance office staff was maddening, strange, and odd. I picked up my kids to take them to lunch. Upon returning them to the school from our lunch I realized they would not be able to make it to class in time before the ball rang. Realizing this I didn't want them to be tardy without an excuse, so, we visited the Attendance office. The Attendance office staff member would not give my kids a tardy excuse although me as their parents was right there with them explaining the reason for their tardy. Now I had to get innovative. The only way I was able to alleviate them being tardy was to sign them out of school, wait until the tardy bell rang, and then have them sign back into school. Now they weren't considered tardy???? No wonder student test scores are low here.
As a former Student from the school facilities are top notch. But from the perspective of the students, it is chaotic. The staff and teachers have preferential treatment to the loud and troublemaker students. Some teachers are great people but are bad at teaching. Last but not least the school is seriously lacking in support for those with depression and other mental struggles.
The school looks great but as a student it sucked. A few of the teachers are just terrible and I have went up to the main principle trying to tell them about it but dumb kids don't know better than adults. Also the school is full of ghetto kids and drug dealers. Lots of fights almost daily and threatening to get shot up. JROTC was awesome though made the school a lot better. Did a lot for the school with little recognition
As a current student at this school, i see some things i don't like, particularly the staff, some of the staff don't seem to care about their students education, i have a few personal favorite teachers like Drinkwine, Trebilcock, and Mrs. Olivia who not only teach, but they're open to talk about personal things you don't feel like talking about to others. Also almost every class is the same thing every day.
I'm giving a 4 stars raiting for the facilities. The exterior of the school is beautiful. Full soccer field, track baseball field. I couldn't believe it. I attended for my sons tournament.
This is a very nice school. I've been here several times for football and baseball and the fields are in great condition. There is plenty of parking to.
Staff is infuriating and unintuitive. Curriculum is lacklustre. Only looks like a good school because it has good looks.
From a students perspective...Some teachers are racist and they get mad and take it out on others...some just dont want to do anything and just sit there and do nothing with a class full of kids..
Nice gym lighting, awesome pool.
It is a fun school and the teachers are helpful
