WELCOME to the Adult School of the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District, a district that has a long and proud history of being committed to excellence in education. The Adult School has been continuously accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) since 1961.
Our History: The Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District has a long history of supporting classes for adults. In the 1930s, night classes in citizenship and English as a Second Language were organized for adults in local church basements. In 1942, the scope of the adult and continuing education curriculum was broadened to include civics, literacy, vocational training, health, homemaking, and technical and general education. In 1961, the first director of Adult Education was appointed and the Adult School was established by the district.
In July of 1992, we moved into a new building at 333 Moffett Boulevard. In 2008–2009, the Adult School registered nearly 11,000 students in over 150 classes at 16 different locations in Los Altos and Mountain View. The outstanding efforts and successes of teachers like you make our adult education programs quality-driven and highly valued by the community.
In February, 2009 adult schools throughout the state were dealt a heavy blow. State education budgets were slashed as economy uncertainty pervaded communities throughout California. The MVLA Adult School reorganized and identified core programs and services. It also transitioned important, but not core classes and services into primarily fee-based programs.
In March, 2011 the Adult School successfully participated in the WASC self-study process towards accreditation. In June, 2011 the MVLA Adult School was granted a clear 6-year accreditation from WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges).
The Adult School is committed to serving adult learners who will gain the knowledge, skills, and proficiency necessary to achieve personal goals in employment, secondary education, and English language skills in order to become self-reliant and productive members of the community.
