For over six years Mr. Easley’s has been meeting the challenge of its mission by helping surrounding area residents and families with a special focus on youth. In 2005, Mr. Easley’s launched the Youth Network (YN) a philanthropic component of Mr. Easley’s Salon –dedicated to improving self-esteem and the academic performance for children and youth living at or below the poverty level. To this end, YN host monthly workshops and activities with an age appropriate and focused curriculum targeting relevant issues. Each month new topics are introduced to engage discussions, host workshops, or activities/ outings around:
• Promoting Family Unity:
Assists youth in identifying factors and behaviors that positively impact family unity and guidance in reinforcing behaviors that foster family unity
• Community Development:
Educate youth on local, state, and federal government operations and the impact of laws affecting education, employment and general quality of life issues
• Financial Management:
Focused workshops on financial planning, budgeting, establishing credit, checking and savings accounts; and business and first-time home ownership
• Health/Hygiene/and Fitness Awareness:
Introduce participants on the foundation of healthy life choices and healthy lifestyles to include drug and alcohol-free living, physical fitness, food to combat disease, and general hygiene
Supplemental to the children/youth component, Mr. Easley’s has hosted or sponsored the following:
• Facilitated a Certified Food Handlers course for local high school students, specifically seniors; sponsoring 20 local high school students for this 24-hour course. The course is held on three consecutive Saturdays a certified food handler expert. Teaching youth trade required food handling skills, proper food preparation protocols, safety skills, and server requirements.
• Since August 2005, Mr. Easley’s has supported the youth and their families in the Washington metropolitan area by sponsoring an annual back-to-school haircut and braiding symposium. This event has grown over the past four years and serves over 150-200 youth annually.
• December 11, 2009, Mr. Easley's Youth Network created “A Child in Need” event providing toys, gifts, and free haircuts and braiding to middle-school youth and their families.
