Museum Antiques
"Implanté en cœur de ville, le Muséum d’Histoire naturelle de La Rochelle, entièrement rénové en 2007 et labellisé « Musée de France », est un outil de compréhension du territoire dans sa dimension naturelle et culturelle. Il propose un regard sur le littoral et les marais tels qu’ils furent hier, tels qu’ils sont aujourd’hui, et simultanément de suivre les pas des explorateurs naturalistes. Il est un lieu de science au croisement de l’ici et des ailleurs."

Very interesting museum that reopened partially on 1July 2022. Lots of fascinating displays but for some of the identification of exhibits the signage was very difficult to read. Upper floors were full of diverse cultural artefacts. Major issue was that they are still working on ticketing, which was a painful process as no cash accepted! Apparently this museum is piloting a cashless payment system for La Rochelle museums: bad idea as it is exclusionary for those who don't have or want smartphones. The system still needs work too. It took us ten minutes to pay and then, as we couldn't get a data connection on our phone we couldn't show the emailed proof of payment. Frustrating!
I'm sure it would be nice to visit but closed for an indefinite period in July 2022 for work taking place. The gardens were also closed when we visited. So check before you get there.
Had no idea what to expect here. We basically made a late decision to go after deciding to explore the old town. I would fully recommend it. The preserved animals are so interesting and for me especially since they were so old. I guess not for everyone but very interesting none the less.
What a great museum! My kids loved the minerals basement and the great range of animals on display. The building is delightfully quaint and the visit is realitively quick. The exhibit about the fauna of the region was the most interesting and informative for me. Highly recommended for a rainy day!
Good, but not incredible. The place was so hot inside. Staff looked miserable, and not tolerant of childre, especially the manager on duty. None of the information screens worked. The highlight was the garden outside, but that's it.
The greatest array of stuffed animals I have ever seen . A great afternoon out. There are many different sections including dinosaur bones rare minerals and rocks and stuffed lions gorillas and every bird you can imagine. Superb
This is not the NH museum of New York or London, that is clear, however, as far as regional museums of this type go, it is excellent. The displays are clearly labelled in French and the variety and quality of the displays are excellent. However, the lack of language translations and the absence of a themed sequence might make the museum more suitable for the ardent enthusiast than for the casual passerby.
Ok on a rainy day but pretty boring really.
Absolutely fantastic! Unbelievable collection of animals, fish, etc. Gorgeous gardens. Beautifully curated. Four floors of natural history, cultural, religious, political, and social history and artifacts. Great family venue.
