Fire & EMS services for City of Myrtle Beach
The Myrtle Beach Fire Department provides fire suppression and protection services from six fire stations and is a first responder on medical calls. Nearly all of the city's firefighters are certified as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) or paramedics. Each engine also has an Automatic External Defibrillator for use on patients with cardiac arrest, and the city operates two ALS ambulances. Myrtle Beach firefighters provide many special services, such as hazardous materials response and confined space rescue.
History:
The Myrtle Beach Fire Department began as a volunteer effort in October 1936, two years before the city's incorporation. The first truck was a 1936 Ford purchased by Myrtle Beach Farms Company. That first fire engine operated out of a wood frame building behind Broadway Restaurant. Back then, when a fire alarm occurred, the first person to reach the fire truck was the one who drove it.
The list of fire department charter members includes some familiar area names: H. M. Walker, Casper P. Benton, Norwood Bellamy, Hoot Gibson, Roscoe Long, Perry Helms, Ralph Veeren, James H. Green, Eli Saleeby, O.C Calloway, Eddie A. Benton, Gary Todd, Clifton Hammond, J.M. Bivens, D.J. Orr, Howell Bellamy and H.C. White.
From those humble beginnings, the fire department has grown into a highly trained and well equipped firefighting and EMS organization. As one of the state's busiest fire department, Myrtle Beach answers more than 10,000 calls for service annually. Today, the city has a state-of-the-art fire fleet and six fire stations.
