I have been creating and designing unique, one of a kind Faberge’ style eggs from natural goose and ostrich eggs for over 40 years. All of my egg designs are one-of-a-kind. I find inspiration everywhere; other arts, other crafts, other cultures, and as always, from nature.
My favorite design is a diorama, because when done properly, the scene will tell a story. Which is fascinating when you realize that’s it’s all packed inside the space of a (goose) egg.
What is even better is learning how to do this yourself. Which is why I have enjoyed teaching egg art as much as designing. Creating a picture story from bits and pieces that are 1” to 3” in size can be both challenging and fun.
The most commonly used eggs for decorating, by size, are duck, goose, rhea, emu and ostrich. As the egg art industry has now been established for over 40 years, all of these eggs, and many others, are available through licensed distributors.
Because of it’s versatile size I prefer to use the goose egg for most of my designs. Duck eggs are used for the smaller designs, and ostrich eggs for the really large ones. Then depending on the design and color, either a rhea egg or an emu egg is used for something in the 13” size range. In many contemporary designs, some or even all of these eggs have are used together to form the whole design scheme.
