I had a museum day and this place was the surprise hit of the day! First of all, it's a fantastically beautiful location, up on Table Mesa with trails and views down into Boulder - it's really amazing. Second, the building itself is astounding. Built by architect I.M. Pei, it's unusual and beautiful, yet suits its surroundings perfectly. Inside, there is a museum on atmospheric research, which I didn't think I would be too interested in, but it's more like a hands-on science museum. You can plunge your hands into a cloud, you can control a cyclone, you can make choices and get a score on your environmental impact. There's also a small theater at the end of the hall and I found it really interesting to learn about the flooding in Boulder and how they've used the walk/bike trails to help control excessive rain in the future. It's a more than usually fun place to visit, very colorful and engaging.
Nice place to learn about the weather. Many hands on exhibits for kids. Theater has several movies, including boulder flood from 2013, wild fires, hurricanes, etc. A library and a cafe open during the week. Free entrance and free parking. You can go for a hike from here too. They recently re-opened the building for the public. I believe it is open 7 days a week. Could be a nice way to spend a day - hike in the morning, eat lunch and explore the building in the pm.
Very nice building designed by the famous architect I. M. Pie. It’s not open to public due to Covid?, but the trail around it has stunning views.
Great view from the parking lot of BOULDER. Beautiful facility, amazing hiking trails. The view from bear peak was amazing! Couldn't resist but post some photos that I took along the way.
Beautiful building in a cimmanding location. Awesome interactive exhibits on Earth's weather patterns, phenomenology, and predictions, as well exhibits on I.M. Pei's architecture and Solar/Space studies. Great place for kids and adults, and it's free! The views from here are awesome and parking for the local hiking trails is free.
Beautiful I.M. Pei designed building. While it was closed for COVID, the trails behind the structure were open.
Incredible views and lots of knowledge to share at the NCAR facility. Ypu can start with the hikes that begin at the facility with free parking avaliable. The trails stretch for miles up the mountain. The views are stunning and worth the hike. When your done ypu can visit the NCAR visitor area where they have many interactive displays and even a CRAY 1 computer. Don't miss this location if your visiting boulder
Today I used NCAR for its parking lot and easy access to boulder open space hiking trails, as I’m sure many of the other reviews mention. While it’s always been a favorite spot, I’m sure usage has increased since boulder began restricting parking at the open space lots to county residents jerks. Despite its quick, easy and free access to great hiking, you can’t overlook the research conducted here and its impact. The visitor center is open every day and a variety of tour options are available. The public can also access restrooms and the cafeteria.
Great views, and an appropriately sized museum and exhibits detailing what NCAR does and why it's important. Special area telling the history of the architecturally significant building and layout. Area describing the computer sever racks/mainframe. Given that it's free, this is an incredible experience to see inside this important institution.
Beautiful trail place. You can just have a walk with your dogs or children, or have tracking on the hills. Free parking space and restroom of NCAR.
