NEW MEDIA GALLERY BACKGROUND

New Media Gallery is a contemporary, public art gallery dedicated to presenting inspiring & provocative new media art from around the world. NMG has achieved an international profile and is proud to bring together work from the last 30 years, by significant established artists, as well as new work by emerging artists.

NMG was established as the civic gallery for the City of New Westminster and began operations in March, 2014. The gallery opened to the public in September, 2014. The gallery serves New Westminster, Metro Vancouver and is establishing a growing international following. Based on published statistics it has become one of the most attended galleries in B.C.

NMG is a non-collecting gallery and does not directly commission work. We accept portfolio submissions year round. We present five exhibitions a year, each 8 - 12 weeks long. Exhibition development includes research, documentation and a commitment to the ongoing care and quality presentation of a diverse range of loaned works from artists, institutions and collectors worldwide.

NMG is a flexible 2000 - 3000 sq ft public gallery Exhibitions have included significant works by: Christian Marclay, Julie Rrap, R.Luke DuBois, Tracey Emin, Tracey Moffatt, Nicholas Provost, Martin Arnold, Martin Creed, Elizabeth McAlpine, Carsten Holler, Carsten Nicolai, Elizabeth Price, Jane & Louise Wilson, Jim Campbell, Tim Lee, Bjorn Schulke, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Pipilotti Rist, Ceal Floyer, Martin Arnold, Jennifer & Kevin McCoy, Christine Borland, Elizabeth McAlpine, among others.

NMG is recognized for the caliber of its artists, unique and provocative exhibitions, active curatorial engagement style and radical exhibition rebuilds. The gallery space is radically redesigned and rebuilt for every exhibition, carefully responding to the needs of each work in consultation with the artist, studio or gallery. The highest international standards of exhibition, conservation and installation are expected and upheld.
NMG is located on the third floor of the new 84,000 sq ft Anvil Centre. Gallery and work areas are designated Class-A. There are two, full-size loading docks, a 364-seat non-proscenium theatre for Artist Talks and performance, an adjacent museum & archives, work studios and workshops. NMG uses all areas of the building for talks, programs, creative interventions and gallery-related work. The gallery maintains a full range of high quality display equipment.

NMG is run by Director-Curator team Gordon Duggan and Sarah Joyce. The team has professional ties with artists, art professionals and galleries worldwide. They have worked in galleries and museums in Canada and internationally including Tate and Lisson. They have extensive experience in all areas of time-based and electronic media art with a firm understanding of exhibition technology and technical exhibition making and design. As well as curatorial backgrounds they have extensive experience in design, arts management, education and conservation. Those working with NMG include staff and expert volunteers, preparators and technicians, registrar, arts administrator, arts programmer and security staff among others.
