Patron Information
Once you (or your child) have a Library card, you have full access to the New York Mills Public Library, libraries within Viking Library System (Browns Valley, Douglas County, Elbow Lake, Fergus Falls, Glenwood, Hancock, Morris, Pelican Rapids, Perham, Wheaton, and the VLS Bookmobile), and all libraries in Minnesota connected to MnLink.
A Library card is issued to you free of charge.
Basic information and an ID are required.

Holidays the Library will be closed are: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.
The Library’s collection includes material intended for people of all ages and comes in a variety of formats:
BOOKS, BOOKS-ON-CD, and STORY KITS:
Loan period: 21 days with one renewal
Overdue fines: 25¢ per day per item
MAGAZINES:
Loan period: 7 days with one renewal
Overdue fines: 25¢ per day per item
Note: Current issues are not available for check-out.
Newspapers are for in-library use only.
DVDs:
Loan period: 4 days with one renewal
Limit: 4 movies per library card.
Overdue fines: $1.00 per day per item
REFERENCE BOOKS, LOCAL HISTORY, & HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOKS:
Not available for check-out. In-library use only.
Parents please note: You are responsible for the items your child checks out and any fines or fees that may accumulate. Discretion as to the content of Library materials checked out by your child is solely your responsibility.
All Library patrons must have a current Library card in order to check-out library materials, including use of a computer. You must present your Library card at the time of check-out. There is a $3.00 replacement fee for lost cards.
To renew items, please stop by the Library with your Library card, call the Library at (218) 385-2436 (leave a message on the answering machine if the Library is closed), or log on to www.nympubliclibrary.org.
Replacement charges will be assessed for lost or damaged items. Failure to return items or pay replacement fees can result in a Petty Misdemeanor – please refer to MN Statute 609.541.
All fines and fees totaling more than $5.00 have to be paid in full before any additional check-out (including computer use) is allowed.
COMPUTERS: For in-library use only. Please bring your own headphones and file saving devices. No time limit except if all computers are filled, then a first on/first off rotation is enforced by Library staff. Printing Fees: 15¢ per side—only black & white available. Wireless internet available.
COPIES: Printing Fees: 15¢ per side—only black & white available.
FAX: To be operated by Library staff only. $1.00 per page if long distance.
INTERLIBRARY LOAN: Requests for items not owned by the Library can be made either with the assistance of the Library staff or by logging onto www.nympubliclibrary.org or www.mnlink.org if not available in Viking Library System.
NOTIFICATIONS: Pre-overdue notices, overdue notices, and request notification is available via email and text messaging service. Sign-up with Library staff for this service. By default, everyone receives overdue notices by mail and request notifications by telephone.
APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR: All library patrons have the right to a quiet, calm, safe atmosphere without disruptions from other patrons. Any Library patron who acts inappropriately will be asked to leave.
GOVERNANCE: The Library Board is responsible for all budget and policy decisions, and meets the 3rd Thursday of every month at 5 pm. All meetings are open to the public.
The Friends of the Library assist with fundraising and advocacy of the Library, and meets twice a year. Everyone is invited to join.
Handicap parking available in the parking lot behind the Library.
A book drop is available by the Library’s backdoor. Anything checked out from the Library may be returned in the book drop.
The Library sponsors events such as story time, summer reading program, and Legacy events. Information about Library events is available on www.nympublic.library.org and on Facebook (search for “New York Mills Public Library”).
Please note: Photos may be taken at various Library activities and events. These photos may be posted on the Library’s website, Facebook page, newspaper article, or other promotional materials. To opt out of these photos, please contact Library staff.
Gifts & Donations to your New York Mills Public Library
We gladly accept donations of: . . .
• Books
• DVDs
• CDs
• Magazines less than 1 year old
All donated material become property of the New York Mills Public Library and will be added to the Library’s collection or sold at the Annual Used Book Sale as determined by Library Staff.
If you have a large donation of materials, please call the Library (385-2436) as storage space is limited.
Other gifts accepted:
• Cash donations: Help the Library purchase materials, supplies, furnishings, and equipment.
• Memorials: Monetary gifts from individuals or organizations in memory of someone can be used to add materials to the Library. A book plate will list the donor and the person in whose honor the gift has been made.
• In Kind: Volunteer your time at the Library by helping Library staff or join the Friends of the Library and help with fundraising projects.
