Join us to make the NY Museum of Skiing and Ski Hall of Fame in North Creek, NY a reality!
Cold day. Blue skies. Fresh snow-covered trails lit by brilliant winter sun. Skiers crisscrossing the slope. Snow- boarder probing the deep powder along the edge. What could be better? 3.9 million people in New York state can’t imagine anything better than the perfect, fresh pow day.
New York has more ski areas than any other state with 58 ski areas evenly distributed throughout the state— nearly all within 90 minutes of a major urban area. The direct economic impact of skiing is enormous—producing $437.2 million in 2012-13—51% directly going to ski resorts and 49% going to other businesses. Additionally, midnight drivers groom slopes, liftees manage chair lifts, waiters serve hot cocoa, shops sell skis, gloves, parkas, boots and bindings, and ski patrollers slide the injured hot dogger down to an awaiting ambulance. Employment, plus capital investment and taxes all add $97.2 million to the state economy. In other words, skiing is BIG BUSINESS here in New York. It is an 86 year old business that is thriving, changing, developing—a story to be told.
And where better to tell it from than North Creek—the birthplace of NY skiing. In the 1920’s people flocked to North Creek via the trains to “Ride Up and Ski Down” the mountain slopes from North River to North Creek. In 1935, the first successful commercial rope tow was erected at the Ski Bowl and used until 1946 when it was replaced by the first mechanical lift in New York. The Ski Bowl continues to offer alpine skiers two chairs, a terrain park, and good trails. Winter 2017, the Ski Bowl also will provide groomed, lit Nordic trails for the general public and host race events on its FIS certified Nordic ski loops. The Ski Bowl is to skiing what Ford is to Detroit.
The exciting narrative of the New York ski industry and its people must be conveyed at The New York Museum of Skiing and Ski Hall of Fame. The museum will chronicle the growth and celebrate the continuing success of the industry, focusing not only on the history but the energy and vitality of today as demonstrated by each operating ski area which chooses to become a part of the museum. The Ski Hall of Fame will celebrate those pioneers who made NY skiing what it is today and the innovators and competitive skiers who have become icons in the industry, influencing NY and the rest of the country.
