Fanwood was chartered in 1817 and is the second oldest school for the Deaf in the United States. The school sits on a 77-acre lot that used to be an apple farm that was originally purchased by the school in 1934. The school began in NYC in the Alms House behind City Hall and after three different relocations the school has remained in White Plains NY area for over 78 years and will soon be celebratiing it's 200th anniversary.
New York School for the Deaf's mission is to maximize each child's potential through comprehensive educational programs with integrated state-of-the-art technology. We specialize in providing an accessible learning environment that inspires every child to think, to learn, to care and to communicate.
We believe this success is maximized through a strong collaboration with families, school districts, agencies, the deaf communicty, the educational research community, the school community, philanthropic sources, and business. In doing so, New York School for the Deaf is an active and exemplary resource in the field of Deaf Education both nationally and internationally.

Our young people develop to their fullest and become self-reliant and successful individuals.
Our beautiful campus is a place where learning happens both inside and outside the classroom. Our students have multiple opportunities to participate in extracurricular activites and to develop a positive self-esteem and appropriate socail skills. As past generations have built today's New York School for the Deaf, so does this generation recognize its responsibility to ensure generations of graduates have every skill needed to be successful in an ever-changing world.
