The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is the governing organization for interscholastic athletics in New York State. NYSPHSAA is the third largest state association in the country with 35 interscholastic sports. NYSPHSAA serves as a central organization for its member schools to promote education-based athletics, sportsmanship, standards of eligibility, safety and equality. Approximately 25,000 student athletes participate in 32 NYSPHSAA State Championship events annually.
To encourage as many pupils as possible to participate in athletic games; Promote sportsmanlike conduct in all athletic contests; Maintain essential minimum standards of eligibility; Provide means to settle disputed athletic contests amicably and authoritatively; Conduct appropriate athletic meets and tournaments; Cooperate with the State Education Department in fostering educationally sound athletic programs; Adapt rules governing sport contests to the particular conditions for school competition; Continually seek data to support rules changes leading to greater safety for school athletes.
