The Village of Newark purchased its first horse drawn fire pump in 1913. The Newark Fire Protection District was formed in 1946. Lewis Dierzen was named to fire Fire Chief. The district is currently made up of 64 square miles. In 1976, 84% of voters approved a referendum to establish a district wide ambulance service. The current fire house was built in 1981, replacing the old building on Front Street. For over 50 years, the Newark Firemen's Association has hosted a pancake supper to raise vital funds to maintain equipment and train volunteer personnel. 100 years after that first horse drawn fire pump, the Newark Fire Department continues to provide exceptional service to the district utilizing modern, up-to-date equipment and dedicated volunteers.
