Newburgh Free Academy

Description

Newburgh Free Academy is the public high school educating all students in grades 9–12 in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, which serves the city of Newburgh, New York, the towns of Newburgh and New Windsor, and portions of the towns of Marlboro, New York, Cornwall, New York and various others. It traces its history back over two centuries, to the years prior to mandatory public education.HistoryThe school traces its history back to the early days of the United States. The Rev. George H. Spierin proposed to open an "Academy" in Newburgh. Work began in 1796 under the direction of the trustees of the glebe. (A glebe was land originally set aside in the early 18th century for a pastor and his church. The glebe for the Newburgh area was issued in 1719.) A portion of the first Academy was occupied in 1797. The building was 60ft by 40 feet (18.5 × 12.3m), two stories high, built of wood, and lined with brick. It was located on Liberty Street and cost around $2,500. The building was not finished until some years later when a court room was included. The building itself saw use as not only a school and court, but was also site for town meetings and political organizations. The first record of a teacher employed was in 1799 when Samuel Nicholson was hired. The Academy had only one teacher during its first eight years of existence. In 1807 management of the school passed from the hands of the trustees of the Glebe to a regularly incorporated Board of Trustees. At that time rates for tuition were adopted. The charge per quarter was $2.50. This was for the study of writing and arithmetic. A scholar studying Greek, Latin or French was charged $5.00 per quarter.

Really appreciated the stadium, built as part of the school. Great idea, and makes an excellent venue.
A big, crowded school. The security is poor with infinite possibilities to smuggle anything in or out. Drugs are very common throughout the school and the administration is a mess. The teachers are fairly good unlike Heritage Middle School and the basic necessities like food and medical attention are handled well. Sadly, everything good about this school is overshadowed by it's issues and seemingly no attempt to solve them.
Poor excuse for a school, administration awful, bullying never handled properly and more concerned with trying to strip kids of their individuality and indoctrinate then rather than do anything to ready them to be successful in their own way and be their own people. If you have half a brain and decent kid you'll keep your kids away from this school, both campuses.
My daughter swims in Newburgh once a year at a meet held at the school, I really liked the natatorium, a little dated but holding up and the bleachers were small, not enough room for a large crowd. However, the football field just outside is immaculate, I wonder how that school performs in athletics?
Good school. Has nice track and field. Has pool, wood shop, welding shop. Typical courses like math, sciences, chemistry, art, theater and music to name a few.
The acedemics are great i have 2 children that go there they are in special ed and this school has no idea what it means to follow an IEP. Secondly if you are a parent that speaks up for your kid or kids when the school is doing wrong unfortunatley the school only treats those kids as troublemakers
It Was the best four years in my life . This school make me have a lot good friends in my life I’m going to miss it
If you have other options, they may work out better. But not horrible.
Eh, could be better, science is fun tho
I can’t with the whites
