History
Established in 1945, the East Providence Association found quarters in rented rooms and several churches for more than three decades before building its current home on Taunton Avenue in Seekonk, Mass. A group of volunteers first set up shop in rooms on the second floor of the District Nurses Home in East Providence. Later, the organization moved to a church on Hazard Avenue and by 1976, the East Providence YMCA was housed in a small church on North Broadway.

In 1980 the building the current facility resides in opened, and within a year 600 families had signed on as members, twice the number anticipated. The original facility held a swimming pool, locker room and an all-purpose room. In 1988, after a capital campaign raised close to a million dollars, the organization added a gymnasium and a child-care center. In 1997 and again in 2002, the Fitness Center was expanded to meet an ever-increasing demand. Additional multi-purpose rooms were added in 2002 as well.

Picked up my Granddaughter on 4/13/23 around 2:30. This was during pool time which I did not know as I never picked her up from there before. The staff heard me explain this to my Granddaughter and even commented because she was a bit upset and stubborn about getting out of the pool. They assured her SHE WOULD BE IN THE POOL ON FRIDAY. I learned they kept her out of the pool because she gave them a hard time Thursday. If I could give less than one star I would. Not sitting well with me at all UPDATE: That staff member has since been transferred and replaced with a caring staff member. A.k.a. Grandpa is happy again
Under new management. Abusive, disorganized. Staff shortage. Classes cancelled. Members leaving in droves. You will not find any recent positive reviews. Awful. Just awful.
Newman YMCA used to be a great family center where the kids could play and the parents could workout. The recent remodeling at the Newman YMCA left us with an incredibly small gym, smaller than most high school gyms, with about half the equipment that was originally in place, with dance studios replacing the once large area since the YMCA no longer wishes to house dance classes in an external studio. Kids care is available only 3 days a week for 4 hours a day with no evening hours. Unfortunately this will be bringing my family to a different YMCA with facilities that support all of us. Positives? The staff are very kind and it’s a clean facility.
So disappointed with the lack of communication here have driven over an hour to enjoy the new splash pad to have it closed for events not posted online or anywhere at all !
Their Gymnasium lights are not working and probably let the management know like million times but they never fix it. The management changes but the problem never goes away. The two lights towards the right corner is not working and very hard to play in the right side of the court. The left side have flooring issues. They need to address this or else the gymnasium enthusiasts will go to other places. Their flooring is broken and always try to fix it with a tape. It is a insurance hazard if I have to be honest. The receptionist is possibly the best employee ever, she is strict and won’t let anyone in with out the access key and on top of things all the time. She remembers the guest even after they visit the premises after the days and would prompt them to get a membership. I am giving 2 rating just for her. The other facilities may be good but I don’t use them much. UPDATE : The lights seems to be fixed, however the flooring is still a problem
They told me on the phone their pool scheduled twice and twice they lied. They were closed both days when we got there. Terrible Y!
This location changed their cardio room into a dance studio for an external group, and now during flu season and a Covid surge they’ve stacked all of their treadmills, ellipticals, bikes and weight training machines into a room the size of an office like sardines. I can’t imagine paying full membership for a gym that resembles my grandmother’s basement. But on the bright side, the staff are very professional and kind. I will be relocating due to this mishap with the dance studio.
There is no baby watch so it is impossible for me to go because I have a child and the coffee is only open at 7am until 12am unlike Swansea where the coffee is open all day long and Swansea also has a playground for children
First and foremost, the staff is both friendly and helpful. The gym is definitely dated. Layout is cramped, equipment is dated...bottom line this facility is due for an update. That said, it's always clean and you can go and put in work.
Only familiar with their kidsworld program. Child enjoys attending there are plenty of different activities during the week to keep him entertained. Staffing there are great always greet me with a smile.
