Newton Cemetery

Description

Newton Cemetery is a cemetery in Newton, in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. Founded in 1860, the cemetery is in current use and is owned and operated by the Newton Cemetery Company. It is the "new" cemetery in town—opening after the Old Newton Burial Ground (founded 1762) was filled. The Newton Cemetery Company was incorporated on 22 March 1860 by an act of the New Jersey state legislature. It named seven men as "corporators", including Michael B. Titman, Moses W. Northrup, attorney Daniel S. Anderson, Samuel Cassady, the Reverend Nathaniel Pettit (of Christ Church, Newton), Thomas N. McCarter, and Whitfield S. Johnson. By 1866, the corporators had raised funds—approximately $16,000—to purchase a tract of land from the heirs of Aaron Peck and open for burials. According to James P. Snell, the first interment was for Joseph A. Linn, who was buried in August 1867. Five years later, in 1872, a local newspaper reported that "the number of interments is about 340--a large majority of which were re-interments from other places".Burial options at Newton Cemetery include interment in the cemetery's Mausoleum Chapel, erected in 1991.

"Established in 1855 and still an burial ground, Newton Cemetery & Arboretum is a non-profit, non-sectarian garden cemetery and accredited arboretum serving families throughout the Greater Boston area. The grounds provide a beautiful, park-like setting with numerous interment options. Ponds, streams, flower gardens, mature trees, and varied wildlife surround the visitor with natural beauty that soothes the mind, comforts the heart and uplifts the soul. The grounds are open every day of the year and visitors are welcome. Maps and self-guided tours are available online and at the office."

An extraordinary place to visit in Newton, Massachusetts. Exceptionally well taken care of and clearly loved. Every inch of the rolling landscape, with beautiful ponds full of ducks & geese, has scenic views and beautifully loved gravestones. A truly honorable place for those we loved that respects all people of all backgrounds. Historically interesting, and full of diverse horticulture and wildlife. A birders paradise as well. I can’t wait to go back!
In Response to Stella”. You clearly have no idea what respecting the deceased is about. Go run elsewhere, Stella. A cemetery is not for running. Cars need to go slowly, and folks walking need to respect the families of our loved ones that are at there resting place here. I find your post offensive, selfish and obnoxious. T
The "No Running" rule in an outside public space is entirely unnecessary. No skateboarding or biking is understandable - But running disturbs no one. It's silly that we can't all freely enjoy this space.
Beautifully designed and maintained. Especially the trees and flowering shrubs. Definitely one of greater Boston's top ten historic cemeteries!
Everything is so well maintained. Beautiful place to walk.
We drove a long way to visit a family member’s gravesite. We’d never visited before. We arrived at the Information Center at 3:45. They were supposed to be open until 4pm. They must have skipped out early.. Since we only had the plot number in Alcove “A,” we were unable to find the site ourselves. There are only street names in the cemetery. We needed their assistance. If they are volunteers, I can understand. I hope they aren’t paid employees that left early. Disappointing.
I like wandering around with an audience of people I know are absolutely wanting to be me... I mean- everyone there would give a lung to be me for just one day. Plus the landscaping is pretty decent.
So sad that you have to call every month to get an area mowed. We have 4 people buried here and it looks like Potters Field. The veterans by the flag pole area looks just as bad. With two patents buried there as well. Abby has not been any help.
One of the more beautiful cemeteries, set in Newton, one of the prettier towns out to the west of Boston.
Beautiful place, very nice and helpful staff.
