Nitro K9
"Nitro K-9 was established in 1994 by Steve Walter, who has trained thousands of dogs all along the West coast. Steve's training philosophy is based on European dog training, underpinned by the concept of yin and yang--or the harmony of opposites. It combines the structure of formal training with the power of balanced, productive energy between dog and handler. The result is true rewards-based training, without food or toys getting in the way."

Matt we are forever grateful for you and your amazing patience, kindness, brilliant training and overall awesomeness! You truly get inside the mind of a dog with so much respect for who they are, what they need and what makes them do what they do. You also are incredibly patient and kind with us as we learn how to work and communicate with our pup. Your integrity and honesty about the process and what it would take to achieve the results we need have been impeccable. I wish we could give ten stars. You are a star! Best of the best. We highly recommend you.Cosmo says thank you!
Matt and the team at NitroK9 are true professionals. They genuinely understand canines, and what they and their handlers need to be successful. Having someone speak an honest assessment of you and your dog’s potential in reaching your aspirations is a rare interaction these days. The team shows consistent commitment to what is best for the dog and ensuring the correct foundations are laid. Honesty and integrity - these qualities are why we have entrusted Matt and the team at Nitro K9 with the development of our German Shepard. We could not be happier with the tools we are being armed with to ensure both we and our pup achieve everything we have set out for.
I decided to give Nitro K-9 a try after adopting a Malenois. I had done some previous training with my other German shepherds at various other trainers with mixed results. I knew nitros philosophy was quite a bit different than the typical food-based training that I had done before and thought it would be worth a try. I initially had some reservations but after the first lesson they all completely disappeared. The crew at nitro K9 helped me to establish an actual bond with my dogs that I honestly didn't even think was possible. I was so impressed after taking my first dog through training with them that I signed up my other two shepherds. I've done most of my lessons with Matt and he gives good feedback and really tailored his approach to each of my dogs needs. It's clear that they really value the overall well-being of the dogs that they train. You need to put in the work to see results but if you do you won't be disappointed!
Steve and Matt are such an amazing team! I was reluctant to try and retrain my 14 year old dog because I figured his age would negate the efforts, but this team of amazing trainors have proven me wrong. After only a few sessions my boy was behaving like he did when he was young and always off leash. I went from having a grumpy old man who acted like he had no manners to a dapper dog who everyone loves to compliment on his good behaviors. I can't thank the team at Nitro K9 enough for giving me back my good boy and making my life just that much easier! I highly recommend seeing them, even for the most stubborn of pups and old doggos.
I can't praise them at Nitro K-9 enough. We have been working with Matt co-owner and he is awesome at training our German Shepherd and especially at training us! He tells it like it is which I appreciate and always does what's best for the dog. He is hands down the most knowledgeable, patient, and fluid meaning he easily moves with whatever is needed in the moment trainer. We have also worked with Steve owner who really is an expert in training and Heather who was so good with our pup. Thank heavens we found them after going through other trainers!
You can't teach old dogs new tricks? Well all I can say is that thank goodness Steve Walter and Matt Pearlman don't buy into that thought process. I took my dog Champ to Steve and Matt at the age of 7. Although Nitro K-9 is the first training facility that I ever took Champ to, I had already spent years training Champ on my own. Champ is a working line Sable coat German Shepherd, and based on his level of drive I was very successful using techniques that through various resources to train him. However I was stuck using resources such as food and toys to train him. This was fine for teaching obedience commands but I struggled to gain good compliance when I did not have food or a toy, such as a ball or tug. His compliance to his obedience commands however was not my biggest challenge or concern. My biggest concern with Champ was his leash reactivity and the potential risk of liability if Champ had the chance to engage aggressively with other humans and or dogs. This concern was real, his reactivity would appear viscous and completely unhinged. The suggestion to put him down was mentioned to me many times over the years. However I knew that was not the dog I had when he was at home. At home he was a sweet gentle dog, as long as he was with his "pack", people he knew. I knew that it was my responsibility to help Champ and putting him down did not seem like an option to me, if there was something I could do about it. Throughout my time working with Steve and Matt the relationship that I had with Champ changed significantly. Champ began to know he must stay engaged and that compliance was not an option. Not only that but the changes in his behavior made a huge impact in our ability to work around other people and dogs, which greatly increased Champ's level of comfort and confidence being around other people or dogs. Now I will be honest Champ is not a new dog. He is the same dog, I still have to be smart in how I manage him, his nature is a working line GSD. However now I can work with him and assimilate him to new places and people on a much quicker basis and his compliance is much better both on and off leash. Long story short I really appreciate Steve and Matt for what they have taught me and how much it has impacted my dogs life in a better way. If you are someone who is interested in really changing the relationship you have with your dog and you don't want to rely on toys or treats for compliance this type of training will be right for you.
So if you're looking to step in a familiar place where things feel comfortable and the boss is exactly how you want him to be, then you're looking to waste your money in group sessions where you feel good about yourself when you're done just because you showed up and your dog made micro-progress. Now if you're looking for the real deal and want REAL, FAST results and want to look back and say "man, that was the best money I could possibly spend", then you're in the right place and it's worth the wait if you have to wait to get started. We had to wait two months to start. First of all, let me tell you that Steve and I are NOT the same type of people whatsoever, in case you were wondering. I'm a web designer who's into yoga, meditation and tries hard to be in touch with his feelings. Steve is a DOG trainer, NOT a barista. If you're looking for a perfect personality match, good luck. Not everything is about you. But Steve knows what he's doing and had my biggest issue fixed on DAY 1. My german shepherd puppy stopped pulling all together after one session. That night, it was gone and I'm still not sure exactly how that happened LOL. Also, I was super stressed out and things did feel uncomfortable for a few session because it's hard work and most of the work was really on ME, it turned out. After 7 sessions, I have a literal perfect dog. If you don't believe me, come to Tambark park and you'll see him there at least twice a day playing frisbee with me. He. Is. Impressive. And I give full credit to Steve. Mushu is better than a remote-controlled dog; He heels before I have to tell him too. I'm signing up for level 2 and will take this as far as I can because it's the right thing to do for this dog. I'm telling you: Whatever any of those bad reviews I'm reading there are saying, I got WAY more than what I paid for and if you care about your big, dangerous beast, do right by him/her and get it properly trained. If you're lucky, you might get to see the very nice side of Steve and realize first impressions are rarely right if you give people a chance. One last thing, as i'm typing this I'm reading that someone says they saw them hitting/hurting dogs, well I can humbly tell you this: Steve spent a few minutes testing Mushu and asked "did you hit him?", I said "yes a couple times because he was super out of line". He looked straight in my eyes and told me to never do that again. He said he could fix it, and he did thank god, and explained WHY that was a terrible thing to do and once you understand it, you realize there's nothing to gain from it and you just don't do it EVER again. So no, they don't hurt dogs, I guarantee it.
I don’t even know where to start. We had a very leash aggressive, energetic Airedale. Now we have a silly yet well trained and well adjusted pup. We did six weeks of board and train; receiving frequent updates and videos of his progress along the way. We coupled that with a series of 1:1 lessons that followed. I have been consistently impressed with Matt’s, Jessica’s and Steve’s caring and consistent approach to coaching. A couple months later, our Airedale was diagnosed with lymphoma. Unthinkable! He is navigating well, but let me tell you… I was even more thankful that we did the foundational training prior to his health issues. When I walk him now I simply use my voice and we avoid pulling on the leash almost completely. Thank you all for your continued support as we navigate this. I am beyond thankful, and will not hesitate recommend you and your valuable services.
A+!!! We recently took a family trip to Alaska and decided to board our three month old German Shepard with Nitro K9. Not only did they board him in an excellent location, but we had the option to utilize the time they had with him and add daily training sessions. They kept us updated and sent photos and videos and really made us feel like we weren’t so far away. The extra training has been a godsend! It feels like everything is so much easier now that he had a good foundation laid. Thank you Nitro K9! You will see us again soon!
We have a rescue dog that exhibited high aggressiveness and anxiety. We also had a lot of difficulty with consistent compliance. We have worked with Steve and Matt and seen a lot of improvement. We now are able to go on walk without aggressive behavior people or other dogs. Most importantly, with their help we have learned how to proactively work with our dog rather than needing to react to their behavior. I would recommend their service to anyone looking for all levels of training.
