"The amazing thing about clay is the limitless ways it can be manipulated and formed. I am constantly experimenting with techniques and pushing the limits of the material and my skills. Each piece I make is handmade and unique
My sculptural work begins as wheel thrown forms and are then manipulated before drying to create their distinct flowing curves and various textures. This work is an exploration of tensions, finding a point between intentionality and spontaneity, structure and fluidity. While also wheel thrown, my functional work aims for a more humble elegance which preserves the shapes and textures formed by fingers in clay. I like to think of it as a gift from my fingers to yours.
Recently, I have been drawn to creating miniatures. A few years back, I returned to pottery after a long break. My hands had forgotten their old skill and needed some reminding. After every collapsed pot I would keep throwing with the remaining clay, determined to make something. Some days were better than others and some days that mound of clay got quite small. In the end, I found that these small objects took a satisfying amount of skill and concentration to produce and that they demand closer inspection and attention to detail when being viewed.
In all of my work, the goal is to create an object that is appealing both to the eye and the touch. Clay is such a sensual medium compared to other forms of art, especially in the case of functional ware which the user actually handles daily. I hope the work I make can communicate a small portion of the experience of its creation. In the end, I hope the work I make can bring others as much joy as making them brings me.
