The National Weather Service (NWS) provides weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy. NWS data and products form a national information database and infrastructure which can be used by other governmental agencies, the private sector, the public, and the global community.
OPC strives to provide the world’s best marine weather decision support services, preventing loss of life and property at sea. Read our full vision and mission statement here: https://ocean.weather.gov/strategic_plan.php
The National Weather Service's Ocean Prediction Center not only provides national guidance to coastal NWS weather forecast offices, but also issues warnings for an area of responsibility. The products that OPC issues include surface analysis charts, forecasts charts of surface fronts, pressure, winds & waves out to 4 days, sea state analysis and text forecasts out to 5 days for waters near the Pacific and Atlantic seaboards, and auspices regarding extratropical storm surge along the nation's coastline. Through the issuance of these and other products, the OPC serves not only our other partners within the NWS, but also a unique user base within the general public and commercial sector.
Below are some examples of the forecast products we produce here at OPC. While only one example of each product is shown here, the products are produced for both the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans.
