Hand turned wooden bowls: Simple, beautiful, functional.
Wooden bowls are full of stories. A wooden bowl contains the story of the tree and the forest it grew in. It contains the story of the maker and his tools and the tradition it was born out of. A bowl contains the stories and memories of the food you eat. A wooden bowl is personable and warm. With frequent and consistent use it becomes part of your story.
I think of my work as a modern interpretation of the wooden bowls in the Scandinavian folk tradition. The tools and approach of these old makers inform the process I use today in my work. I use green wood and simple edge tools. Often I do not sand my work, leaving the tool marks as a testament to the making process. My production work is done on a modern power lathe, and I enjoy demonstrating on a traditional spring-pole lathe.
All of my materials are local Minnesota hardwoods, primarily birch, black cherry, black walnut, and butternut. My work is finished with food-safe linseed oil.
