Since moving into Harbor Park in 1993, the Tides have been represented primarily by one logo: the word "Tides" with a crashing wave above it. For 2016 and beyond, we wanted to conceptualize a new look that has character and personality. A family of nautical logos that represent our team and our community were created.
With several aquatic animals or creatures having ties to individual communities, for instance, Norfolk adopted the mermaid as its mascot. Similarly, Virginia Beach embraced dolphins and King Neptune, and Newport News closely associate with oysters with Oyster Point. Thus we selected the seahorse to celebrate the unique sea creature native to Hampton Roads.
The lined seahorse calls the lower Chesapeake Bay its home, and are the only seahorses indigenous to the area. Varying in color, dark lines reach from the head down the lower back. You can find a lined seahorse in shallow waters during the summer and usually they will be hiding in grass beds or clinging to ropes or crab pots.
To show our respect for the United States Navy, Naval Station Norfolk, and the maritime shipping industry, we added a stylized anchor, shaped like an N for Norfolk. Triton (our beloved seahorse) also carries a trident stylized with the letter N.
This year we also introduced a new color scheme. Kelly Green and Jade Green represent the aquatic life, giving a classic feel of a Sea Green. Also, we retained the orange that connects the Tides with the club's Major League affiliate, the Baltimore Orioles. Finally, the silver and gray are a final nod to the naval ships and shipping vessels that frequent our surrounding waters.
