It is a very well maintained museum. The staff were very friendly, had a great time seeing all the exhibits from olden times maintained in the best way possible. And it's open to the public for free, but you can do your part by offering small donations. My favorites were a couple of exhibits with houses and rooms which were about 150 years old and also a few exhibits where they recreated models of scenes from the past, the one I have in my pics. This is a good place to learn and feel the history of North Carolina. Overall, time well spent at the museum.
For anyone that loves history as much as I do, you will definitely enjoy your time at Raleigh History Museum. It is free and not too hard to find parking close to the museum especially on weekends when you don’t have to pay to park. The staff are friendly and willing to help with any questions. Even on a Saturday it was not too crowded, and walking through the history of North Carolina was so fun. It is a clean and educational place for both children and adults. There were so many exhibits to see and so much stuff to read that you can spend as much or as little time as you want here.
One of the best museums I've been to in a long time. This museum contains an astounding number of amazing artifacts including two full houses. Information and artifacts are organized beautifully and exhibits are designed to immerse you in the history. Parking was easy and admission was free!
This museum has done a great job of documenting NC history in an interesting way. Today a gentlemen explained how native Americans made canoes before there were metal tools to use. The kids found it very interesting. We have visited before so revisited some of our favorite spots. The pirate display is always a favorite. We also enjoyed the sports hall. Highly reccomend for almost any age.
This was an unplanned trip. We had just visited the North Carolina museum of natural sciences & we had some time in our schedule, so we walked in. If you love history, this place is for you! Love their museum store! We plan on returning the next time we are in the Raleigh area. Check out my pics.
Beyond anything my mind could have imagined! I love history sooo immensely! This place is a history lover's dream! Information around every single twist and turn. Amazing setups and actual objects from various eras in time. You can easily spend hours here and still have tons to discover and learn. I adored the interactive films that played throughout the museum.
Raleigh Museum of History was very enjoyable from the start. The galleries are all different and give you many unique events and time periods in history to go through. Very clean amid COVID protocols and free to the public. Highly recommended!!
All encompassing museum on the history of North Carolina, focusing on its role in aiding pirates and efforts in the civil and world wars. Special exhibits showcase the states sports legacy. A wonderful museum with interactive exhibits and free admission.
I just want to start by saying that there is no way my review can do this place justice. I visited at the beginning of November of 2021 and I have either spoken about or thought of this museum nearly every day since. This museum is absolutely phenomenal. Obviously, I’m a bit of a history buff since I’ve been thinking of a museum for the past few months, but it was the highlight of my trip to North Carolina and think it’s a must visit for everyone. I was blown away with how many interactive exhibits there were and made sure to click every button, as if I was three years old, to make sure I didn’t miss out on anything. I’m from the North, so it was very interesting to learn not only about North Carolina State history but about US history as well. My only qualm with the museum was their wording on one of the slavery exhibits. It said something along the lines of "many slaves did not agree" and that feels like a huge understatement. It seems like we should be at a point where we can all collectively agree that the vast majority of, if not all, slaves would have rather had been free than enslaved. But, this wording choice did not deter me from having a great time, I was just caught off guard by it. They have an INCREDIBLE exhibit on the World Wars upstairs. It was so immersive that I do think it should come with a warning for those who may suffer from PTSD. I went on a very quiet mid-week morning, so I was the only one in the exhibit at the time and it was very eerie, and a bit unnerving, to be in it alone. They also have a large exhibit on sport history in North Carolina which I was very excited to see. Also, they had an entire exhibit on the history of Beach Music which I had never thought of as a genre all on its own but that was another great experience. The gift shop had a good variety and was very fairly priced. I did my research ahead of time on where to park and ended up in a lot one street over, which was perfect and well located for my stroll around Raleigh. Just, come here, that’s all I can say. This Museum has done an incredible job at providing a lot of historical facts while making it easy to understand and engaging. You don’t need to be a history buff to enjoy your visit here!
Fantastic NC treasure and fun place to take the family or a date. It’s interesting to see which exhibits spark curiosity in different people. No matter your area of interest you are likely to find something here you love, personally I love it all.
