Sleep studies are performed for a variety of reasons including narcolepsy, insomnia, sleep walking and others. Although, the overwhelming majority of requests for a study are to evaluate for a condition known as sleep apnea (ap-knee-uh). Signs and symptoms of sleep apnea include but are not limited to snoring, daytime fatigue/sleepiness, headaches, high blood pressure, restless sleep, sexual dysfunction, and occasional insomnia. Patients who have sleep apnea and are not treated suffer from poor sleep quality and have serious health risks such as
* high blood pressure
* heart attack
* stroke
* depression
* premature death
Other neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, probably are associated with unrecognized sleep apnea. Patients with untreated sleep apnea are at least five times more likely to have a fatal car accident.
