Northside Lodge No. 292, A.F. & A.M.
Richmond, Virginia
Northside Lodge had its beginning when a number of the Brethren, members of several Lodges in the Richmond area, residing in the Chestnut Hill section, north of downtown Richmond, and later known as Highland Park, decided that a Masonic Lodge should be established in the community. A dispensation was granted on March 20, 1906. The charter was issued on February 14, 1907, with the following officers:
James C. Bowman Worshipful Master
Julian Gunn Senior Warden
David K. Walthall Junior Warden
Brother William H. Moore, a charter member of this Lodge, delivered milk in Highland Park and at the same time notified members of Lodge meetings. That beats todays Post office. The first petition received by Northside Lodge No. 292 was from an Englishman, W. R. Dunn. Brother Dunn was a member of the tailoring firm Stokes and Dunn. Brother Dunn, the first candidate raised by Northside Lodge, was regular in attendance, made a trustee, and served as Worshipful Mater in 1911.
The Lodge began meeting in the Old Town Hall on Fourth Avenue. Subsequently the Old Town Hall was condemned. At the invitation of their Worshipful Master, Northside Lodge moved to Richmond Randolph Lodge No. 19. The Lodge met in their building until the new temple for Northside was completed at Fourth Avenue and Meadowbridge Road.
The new temple was completed on December 17, 1915.
Ground breaking ceremonies for the present temple were held on October 29, 1967. The cornerstone was laid on March 30, 1968. The first meeting was held in the new temple on September 20, 1968.
In 1984 Northside Lodge celebrated 75 years.
As we review snatches of history of our Lodge, and the Brethren recall personal experiences and stories by those who had a part in the building of this Lodge, let us not forget that those of us who are members today are also making Masonic history. May we be inspired by the acts of our Founders and resolve that Masonry will go forward in our day. May we keep alive the tenets of Freemasonry in our daily lives, so that others may want to join us to carry on our love for God, Country, and our Fellow Man.
