Awesome ski/snowboard mountain with a world class terrain park. More trails than you could ask for will keep you busy riding different parts of the mountain. Vast terrain park caters to all levels of riders. Halfpipe was cut beautifully and one of my favorites I've ridden.
Experience: 10 Value: 9 Quality: 9 Amenities: 8 Architecture: 10 Uniqueness: 8 Experience: I have always had a fantastic experience here at Northstar. From snowboarding to mountain biking the mountain is cultivated with excellence. Value: Whether you are stopping in for the day or have an Epic pass and come multiple times a year, Northstar is a great place to visit. Quality: The quality of the mountain is excellent and the staff members in the various shops are always helpful and kind. Amenities: There are a couple different bars, restaurants and shops in the village and on the mountain. Like any ski resort, the food and drink is pricey and not of the highest quality. But you still can get a good meal and grab a pint or cocktail during your stay. Architecture: I love the building architecture and layout of the village. When you are here and it is snowing, you get the sensation that you are transported to a European town. Uniqueness: For the area this is a unique resort. From the architecture to the mountain landscape, it is easy to love Northstar.
I'm rating the bike park. It's great riding especially in good conditions otherwise very loose and dusty. Took one star off because they can do better as a bike park providing water everywhere not just at the top of the lifts and also the mechanics shop seems to be closed every time I've been there. What kind of bike park doesn't staff at least 1-2 mechanics? For the price of admission could try a bit harder. But the riding is great, love the park.
Beautiful skiing, but give 1 star for overall experience. It’s the first year I bought the ski pass. Went twice with it. And it’s a waste of time. Took us 1 hour to get from parking to skiing, and 2 hours on the way back. The shuttle line was huge, the line moved slowly, 20-30 min between the buses. Shuttle ride itself took 30 min. There is no way you can stay in the village to have dinner, because the buses are only till 6pm. So all the crowd is trying to leave resort at the same time and cars and buses are all bumper to bumper. Add bumper to bumper to get to Truckee - and you drive your car longer than you get to ski. Nice resort and fast chairs, but how they deal with parking… it’s just not worth it.
I'm rating the skiing experience in this resort. The ski runs are awesome here, and that is if you manage to get there. The problem with this resort is the single lane highway from there interstate and the single lane road that takes you into the resort parking. Good luck navigating this on any given weekend. I was there this month and on both Saturday and Sunday I had to endure 2 plus hours waiting to get parking, while being only like a mile away from the resort. Quest, as I neared the resort, I found that all the spots were full. I'm a season pass holder. Why sell me passes in advance when you can't even guarantee parking? I could have stayed within the resort, but that meant paying upwards of $500 per night. Chair lifts on the second day when I managed to get parking were equally crowded and the lines were long. Do not go here if you plan to go on a weekend. It's not worth it.
Lots of intermediate, wide, groomed runs. Fun, tree runs for intermediate skiers. Parking and bus shuttles worked great for us. Got there by 8:30 on Saturday and Sunday and had parking at the free Village View parking. Bus pickup within a couple minutes and going back was the same. Bottlenecks going up the mountain in the morning as most everyone needs to take the gondola and then other lifts from mid mountain.
One of the best managed ski resorts in the Tahoe area. Has good options for almost all skill levels, the backside and lookout mountain are much less crowded and provide some of the best long stretches of black diamond runs in the region. Traffic can be a hassle to get in, strongly recommend staying at a condo inside the resort.
Great place for the family. The rooms are nice and help accommodate extended stays. Driving to the resort is fairly easy from the Reno airport. The shops and restaurants in the Northstar Village are a little pricey but they have what you need. You can always take a short drive to Truckee and stock up as well.
No California area can get 5 stars because CA snow socks. The area lacks truely expert terrain, but the trail system is well laid out with good variety. The early season staff are friendly and efficient. Midweek crowds are not an issue. The remote parking system works well. Yellow lots more so
Worst resort I’ve been to and I have been to a good number Europe and North America Arrived at 830 to parking lot furthest one as uppers were already full and didn’t actually ski until 1045. Line to park. Line to bus. Bus had line of traffic to reach resort. Long walk to gondola. Long line for gondola. Line for next lift and lift after as zephyr was spinning but closed … fortunately being on epic .. meant didn’t need wait lift ticket line also and drop what ever ridiculous sum of money for day pass only to stand around waiting. I don’t believe I’ve ever waited so much except at Disney as young kid. Every ski area I’ve been to: arriving at 830 means downhill action by 915 at latest. In short: terrible logistics and designed resort. Not going to pay to stand around. And even when skiing : I’ve had more fun at east coast 1000 ft verticals ski areas. First time and last visit. And after reading lots of other reviews: seems many others feel the same. Assuming the good reviews are from beginning skiers or paid resort fanboys/moms
