The Center for Communication and Health is a program of Northwestern University’s world-renowned School of Communication. Located in Abbott Hall in the heart of the Northwestern medical center campus, the Center for Communication and Health is the first unit to take up residence on the School of Communication’s Chicago campus.
The guiding principle for the Center is to assemble an interdisciplinary group of scholars who share the goal of designing new interfaces to promote health. We are using the term interface in a very broad sense, to refer to any interaction, message, or medium that serves people as an entry point to the ideas, information, intentions, strategies, people, networks, and organizations that can improve their health and wellness. Our decision to focus on interfaces signals a commitment to draw on and integrate two otherwise disparate streams of research to promote improvements in health and healthcare: first, research on social influence, which informs us about how communication can shape attention, learning, attitudes, intentions, and behavior to promote health; and second, research on human-centered design, which informs us about how individuals navigate through sociotechnical systems to gain the information, not to mention the protocols and treatments, they need to achieve their health goals.
Through education and research, the Center’s mission is to improve the quality and safety of healthcare as patients experience it, to improve the health of populations, and to reduce the cost of care by applying the interdisciplinary tools of interaction design as well as the communication arts and sciences to the most pressing challenges in healthcare.
