Oak Grove Farm

Description

Oak Grove Farm is a historic First Period farmstead at 410 Exchange Street in Millis, Massachusetts. The 2.5 story wood frame farmhouse was probably built in three phases, the first of which was in the early 18th century. Around this time, the left five bays of the house were built, as was a central chimney. In the second quarter of the 19th century, three bays were added to the right, giving the building its current asymmetrical eight-bay facade. Finally, in 1884 a series of modifications and additions were made. The central chimney was removed, a leanto section was added to the rear of the house, and the front porch was added. A second porch was also built onto the rear ell around this time. The land on which the farmhouse stands has been farmed by English settlers since at least 1677, when Josiah Rockwood (also sometimes referred to as "Rockett") owned the property. Although maps show a house at the site in 1713, there is no other documentary evidence of the house until 1783, when a deed transferring the farm, with house, was recorded. For much of the 19th century the farm was owned by the Lovell family; it was purchased by Lansing Millis (the namesake of the town) in 1879. Millis, a railroad executive, established a dairy farm on the property, and gave it the name "Oak Grove Farm". His family used the property as a summer residence until 1883, after which he converted the house into a boarding house for the farm workers. By 1893 (after Millis' death) the farm was reported to be the largest dairy farm in New England. In the 20th century the property changed hands a few times, but remained in use as a dairy farm. In 1984, with a sale planned to a developer, the town purchased the property as one of the last open spaces near the town center. The farmland has been converted for use as recreational facilities, and the house has been restored and is managed by the town as a rental property.

It's basic park right in Millis. There's a soccer/baseball field in back and trails as well. There's playground equipment for the younger kids and the older kids, so that's a plus. It's located next to an old farm house. It's ina very nice location. I'd come back again with the kids. There's also a local donut shop nearby.
10/21/19. Beautiful day on the fields. Nice colors still left on some trees. I hope everyone remembers to pick up their trash, keep the grounds keeper happy.
Such a well kept park with some awesome walking trails!
This is a really nice park, beware though everyone takes their dog off leash leash though there are signs everywhere to keep your dog on leash. If you have a reactive dog, this isn't the place to go. I really wish they would enforce leashes here. I can't count how many times I've brought my dog there, on leash, and someone allows their dog to come up to mine without asking and says "my dogs friendly" .... it doesn't matter. Mine may not be. Someone may be afraid of dogs. If you don't leash your dog you need them to be able to be recalled when needed. Really frustrating. I've never seen so many dogs off leash except for here.
Beautiful park right off a main road!
Nice facility. A little hard to locate for a first-timer. If there were signs, I missed them. Multiple active playing fields, multiple parking areas. Nice play area & equipment for the young children.
No shade and steep slides don't mix well for my little ones but at little older 5-9 and you could pass an hour or two fairly easily. Nice short walking trail available as well.
This is a beautiful place to run, walk and let your play fetch! The open fields take you to another world in all seasons. If I could reccommend that trash cans are in by baseball field or entrance to the trails that would really help with dog waste. I see bags left on trails too many times or dog waste just left because people have no place to put it. I myself bag it, carry it for the 45 min walk i take and then bring it home in my car. It definitely is an inconvience and I wish there was a can so I didn't have to do that.
This is a great park for kids if any age. Adults too! The trails and fields are really nice as well.
Great playground my 3 kids love it. There are fields and cool walking trails.
