Oak Lawn Community High School- Nurse's Office

About

Welcome! District 229 recognizes that an individual's education and growth is related to their physical, mental and emotional well being.

Description

The Nurse's Office is staffed by a full-time certified school nurse, part-time nurse, and part-time secretary. At OLCHS, the school nurses strive to promote the health and safety of our students in school, at home, and in the community. Whether your child has a medical condition, short-term illness or injury, please do not hesitate to contact us.

"You cannot educate a child who is not healthy, and you cannot keep a child healthy who is not educated."-Jocelyn Elders MD, former Surgeon General

Nursing Services

Daily direct nursing services include illness/injury assessment and intervention, emergency care, medication administration, and health counseling. Vision and hearing screenings, physical and immunization compliance, and other public health mandates are also managed by the Nurse's Office. Vision and hearing screenings will be scheduled annually, throughout the school year, for students receiving Special Education services.

Except in the case of an emergency, a student must have a timed pass from his/her current period teacher before coming to the Nurse's Office. As a general rule students may not rest in the Nurse's Office for a full academic period. A student with a medical condition (e.g. Asthma, Diabetes) should be known to the Nurse's Office prior to the student entering school. It is the parent's responsibility to notify the nurse and appropriate staff if their son/daughter ever experiences a mental, physical, or emotional condition that may limit them from full participation in a class and/or extra-curricular activity. Parents should report such conditions, describe potential dangers, and specify the limitaions caused by such conditions. To provide for safe daily care and emergency procedures, such health information gathered from health records will be sensitively shared with faculty and staff members with whom the student has contact, in accordance with HIPPA and FERPA regulations and verbal authorization by the parents/guardians.

Medication should be limited to those required during school hours which are necessary to maintain the student in school and those needed in case of an emergency. If a student requires any prescription or non-prescription medication, during the school day, a Permission Form for Prescribed Medication must be completed by a physician and parent/guardian. This form should be completed every school year, regardless if the script remains the same.
