In 1911, after the State passed a law requiring counties to establish free public libraries, a library branch was opened in what was then called Fresno Flats. Before an actual library was opened in the Oakhurst area in 1960, there were tiny branches located all over the mountain area. The one in the Oakhurst community was located in the Oakhurst Market. The present library was built in 1977 with federal revenue-sharing funds, and replaced a very small library housed in an old building shared with the Sierra Justice Court in use since 1960 (this building, originally the Fresno Flats Schoolhouse built in 1874, is now located at Fresno Flats Historical Park). A 1500 sq. ft. addition was built in 1992 with monies raised by FOBL, a matching-funds grant from LSCA, and Madera County.
The mission of Madera County Library is to provide balanced and up-to-date resources for the educational and recreational needs of its patrons, a professional information service, public access to electronic media, and a pleasant, safe and clean environment.
