Oakland Museum of California
"The mission of the Oakland Museum of California is to inspire all Californians to create a more vibrant future for themselves and their communities. When the Oakland Museum of California OMCA first opened its doors fifty years ago, it brought together three historically independent disciplines—art, history, and natural sciences—under one roof. This progressive multidisciplinary approach was to celebrate the many facets of California."

The natural sciences section really left a lot to be desired. The special exhibition looked like art made by children which some of it was unique, but still left a lot to be desired as well. compared to the California Academy of sciences in San Francisco, this museum truly fails greatly in comparison. And one of the sections in the natural sciences, there was a homeless man sleeping on the floor and security didn’t even say anything to him. If you’re looking for an interactive, excellent fascinating museum, I would pass on this one. This is more for children.
The museum primarily features two major departments: the History Museum and the Natural Sciences Museum, both of which are impeccably organized and display a plethora of historical artifacts. Visitors can uncover fascinating insights into the history and geography of California. Additionally, there's a spacious children's play area within the Natural Sciences department. While the Modern Art Gallery had a collection that was somewhat underwhelming, the museum offers other attractions, including a koi pond, a gift store, and a lovely lawn area. Notably, the Towne Fare restaurant left a lasting impression; we thoroughly enjoyed both the ambiance and the delicious food. We certainly plan to return, if only for the exceptional dining experience. I definitely recommend OMCA for young kids. It's worth noting that exploring the entire museum thoroughly may take an entire day, so plan your visit accordingly. Parking is also convenient, with ample street parking available and a parking garage.
Located on the outer edge of the museum BART side is an amazing spot called TOWN FARE and we had to try their Brunch...they have a patio/lounge area that has a bar while you wait...They had a DJ playing some really good music, the Food was DELICIOUS...We had to try the Chicken and Waffles, Fried Pork Chops with Grits, eggs and a Biscuit, Deviled Egg of the month, Blackened Cat Fish half eaten in pic, sorry was sooooo good, Doscuit Bites and Orange and Guava Mimosas...but best of all was the vibe! Great friendly Staff and Customers..Ran into Channel 2 news anchor Dave Clark....a Beautiful way to spend a Sunday Morning in the Bay Area
This is my second time at this museum. The first was for the hip hop exhibit and Angela Davis for my most recent. Their main exhibits have been really great. A docent gave us a tour of the California history the last time. This time I went into Natural History area which was ok for kids. The gardens have great views and great on a sunny day. I went to the restaurant this time which was pretty decent too. Hit up Mad Oak afterwards for cocktails which is only a block and a half away.
This is a great museum with art, history, science, and special exhibits, and a big garden. The first Sundays of every month are free days, and you can get in for free on the first Saturday if you have a Bank of America card, since this museum participates in the Museums on Us program. There is paid parking, but Lake Merritt BART is only a few blocks away. The museum was very clean and had security guards. Also, there's a gift shop and restaurant. If you're looking to spend a day in a detailed museum with exhibits for all ages, this is the place for you.
Great museum full of rich history, arts, science and kids stimulation activities located at the heart of Oakland downtown across Lake Merritt. Kids fully enjoyed collaborating while cooking their thoughtful veggie dishes. Can be a good plan with family especially since Fridays are open from 5 pm-11 pm. Must visit if anyone is near Oakland for any business.
Little gem of a museum that provides a good history of California. We came here on a recent Bank of America "Museums On Us" weekend and had a great visit. It had been a few years since our last visit so I was pleasantly surprised to see some updated exhibits. If you're into natural science or want to learn more about California, I recommend checking OMCA out, especially if you are a Bank of America customer.
Awesome experience... Only visited the California portion. Still spent 3 hours!! Cafe food was amazing wtheck who knew a museum would have such upscale cuisine. All that said I'm definitely going back to view the rest of the museum I did not go to the top level most likely best part there are three levels, on this day we visited the mid level. We are going back next weekend. This is an amazing experience for couples, singles and families I would recommend this experience for everyone. Truly educational and great fun.
Touring the Oakland Museum of California was part of the California Association of Museum Conference Common Ground 2023. I was intrigued by the installations and collections. The Panther Exhibition on the Oakland Black Panther movement and Angela Davis I spent time in, and I would recommend a visit to learn about one of the most prolific eras in African American history.
Fantastic museum. Kids enter for free and adults pay $19 which is reasonable for the content. The history section was enjoyable and there’s a good balance of substance and interactive exhibits to keep kids entertained. There’s also a nice garden / plaza which is free to enter. There are also some outdoor tables where you can sit and have a snack.
