I was visiting a friend a witnessed students of the campus physically and verbally attack a group of people peacefully demonstrating an anti abortion cause. These animals literally kicked, spat on this girl and eventually police showed up, when they escorted out the group, haggle er’s followed these people and cause a big scene! Don’t enroll your kids here. Animals and crazy people here
Captured this beautiful Orchard Ridge Campus while walking to the class. Summers are beautiful, Fall is spectacular and winters are heavenly provided you are inside the building I spent two years learning Computer Science and Mathematics here. Faculty members are extremely knowledgeable and kind.
DO NOT BUY A LAPTOP FROM THE BOOK STORE. I bought a laptop from the book store and right out of the box it was defective. It over heated like crazy where the fans were going crazy and making an insane about of noise. It kept freezing and shuting down, it burnt my lap and it was slow as heck and hot to the touch. I tried to return it like 3 days after I bought it because of this but they told me I couldn't return it and there was nothing they could do to fix it. Not three months after I bought it did the hard drive fry because of the heat. I called up Dell and after a nightmare of getting ahold of someone and being hung up on and sushed they couldn't refund it telling me that because I bought it with financial aid that I wouldn't get the money back but some random office person at the school would. I'm now waiting for it to be repaired and sent back to me.
This school has very incompetent financial aid advisors. They do not explain or try to help you at all. They do not care about the students they care only about their job which is doing nothing but confuse you more or give you minimum explanation with no solutions. And any advice they do give you is redundant. My advice to people considering coming here is to not simply because of this issue. Do a trade or consider a different college that doesn’t make you pay for your classes before you even get any financial aid support because this is what OCC does. Then they refund you which is definitely an inconvenience having to wait for that money to be reimbursed to you. Since covid, this school has went to trash. No one to speak to in person, less bookstores and no in person counseling. Of course, again, last but not least is there are no financial aid advisors that actually help you and they simply don’t care to help. I’d say the best thing about this school is the taking the classes, most of the professors and some of the counselors who actually care about THEIR students future. Anthony and Renee are the best counselors. And as for teachers I’ve only ever had one real bad professor. It was a Spanish professor who literally made a “slow jokes” to the class and was very aggressive when engaging with the class as well. It was online, but that is still no excuse to be frustrated with your students. He said he was going to retire too, so I don’t know if he did or not but honestly, hopefully he did. What this school could do to better for its campuses would be to start allowing in person visits again, and maybe give better training to those who are working in the financial aid offices. That, or hire non-students to work their financial aid office who may actually know what their doing and how to explain/guide people on what to do and how to fix certain situations instead of grazing over the issues. People that will provide actual help and understanding even if it takes a full 30 minutes on the phone with someone to make sure they are understanding. Despite the financial aid advisors, I enjoy coming to this school for the education and the professors who teach these classes. I truly just wish they had better people working in their Finacial aid department and the fact you can’t speak to anyone in person on important matters is a con as well. That’s it. I still plan to finish my education here since I only have one main Gen education class to finish. But, I’ll just have to deal with multiple headaches. As for the program I want to get into I may transfer somewhere else, but we will see. I just don’t think I can do another two years with the Finacial aid here.
Beautiful campus. Small class size. Wonderful professors.
You can tell the people answering calls do not like their job. Their tone is always off. The last lady I talked to today who scheduled my counseling appointment told me to go to the website and read to get the rest of my questions answered. OCC really needs new staff that actually enjoy their job and want to help students. Orchard ridge and Southfield campus
I’ve been going to OCC remotely and in person for about a year now and overall it’s been a pretty good experience. This location in particular is beautiful and I love the nature aspect it has. Quite a far walk inside to class, bearing the Michigan elements & I wish they would let students park closer as the staff lot is rarely at more than 5% capacity. The campus is very clean and accommodating, overall I haven’t had a professor that I hated and have actually enjoyed quite a few classes and professors, as well as learned a thing or two. I wish there was more of a community aspect and I haven’t gotten to see a guidance counselor in person yet which sucks. Have also spoken to a few financial aid or other department people on the phone and they’ve been quite rude. Other than that I think OCC is a great choice for a community college.
ABSURD. Professors canceling classes 6 days before the start date after having them on my schedule and paid for months in advance. Truly unprofessional staff. Doesn’t seem to care about their students if this is what they do.
The staff members and faculty are phenomenal! They will help you in any way that they possibly can including but not limited to free tutoring, help with financial aid and accommodations for classes. The members of the Orchard Ridge campus will do their best to ensure that you have a pleasant and educational experience at Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge! I highly recommend.
The financial aid office at this location is incompetent. I had to submit a form for financial aid 3 times. When I asked the lady while I was there if the form was complete and no more information is needed. I had to return 3 times with papers that they did not need in the first place. Now, waiting for financial aid to complete my profile. It’s been 7 weeks. Every week, I am told next week everything should be completed. When I called I was placed on long hold just to be told again next week. Got an email from fafsa yesterday. Apparently the financial aid office is still working on it. School starts next week. Their only solution is to pay for classes and get reimbursed. Now I have to pay 50% upfront. I am not going to be able to take classes this semester. Will be going to another school in the Winter. They are never helpful when you come in or call.
