Ocoee Whitewater Center

Description

The Ocoee Whitewater Center, near Ducktown, Tennessee, United States, was the canoe slalom venue for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and is the only in-river course to be used for Olympic slalom competition. A 1,640 foot (500 m) stretch of the Upper Ocoee River was narrowed by two-thirds to create the drops and eddies needed for a slalom course. Today, the course is watered only on summer weekends, 34 days a year, for use by guided rafts and private boaters. When the river has water, 24 commercial rafting companies take more than 750 raft passengers through the course each day.No longer used for slalom, the hanging slalom gates have been permanently removed. Because the river is dry most of the year, the Center, now operated by the U.S. Forest Service, also serves as a site for hiking, mountain biking, conferences, weddings, and receptions. It receives about 300,000 visitors a year.Design and constructionSince most Olympic host cities are located far from usable whitewater, canoe slalom is a relatively recent addition to the Olympic games. The first two Olympic canoe slalom venues were canals built around dams on small rivers in nearby mountains: Augsburg Eiskanal for the 1972 Munich Games, and Segre Olympic Park for the 1992 Barcelona Games. The 1996 Atlanta Games produced the third such venue by modifying the then-dry streambed of the Upper Ocoee River. As the only in-river Olympic venue, it had the greatest water volume, the highest drop, and the steepest slope. The more recent Olympic venues, built closer to their host cities, rely entirely on pumped water and use smaller concrete channels designed to minimize the energy cost of running the pumps.

Cool stop along the drive through the Cherokee National Forrest. Wish we had packed swim suits and towels, as it was HOT! Very cool walking along the rocks and bridges, despite a section being closed near the closed east entrance. I really wish it were possible to see the rapids that were used by the olympians, but it was still cool to explore a 1996 Olympic venue. We took our 2 Boston Terriers, who had no problem with the terrain, but the heat was too much for them. We turned back to cool them off.

Unfortunately, this burnt down last year.. however the trails and bridges are open. And the river area was beautiful!
So beautiful! We camped nearby and walked to this area. We didn’t realize the 96 Olympics well the water part were here. Fun to walk around and see the beauty they created years ago.
Glorious trails set among the trees and Ocoee River. The building is surprisingly spacious with excellent photo opportunities all over. A nice paved path follows the river and it's easy to picture in your mind's eye all the Olympic competitors and spectators many years ago. If you're driving the scenic two-lane roads around here this is definitely worth your while to stop, even if only for a short while. I would have liked to have spent a half day or longer exploring the trails.
Great place and a must see place on your ventures through this area. The park is clean and beautifully landacaped without loosing it natural ambiance. The works of the enter are friendly and do all they can to answer any and all your questions. The gidt shop has lots of wonderfully priced items that won't break your souvenir budget!!! Absolutely gorgeous! The museum’s displays perfectly present Ocoee’s Olympic history and provide real insight into the sport and sporting events that continue to be held here. The grounds are amazing anytime of year, even when the water is low.
What's not to love about this beautiful place! We we're driving to Lake Blue ridge and just had to stop. The bridge is pretty spectacular with two amazing views. Kid friendly with wheelchair accessibility.
