Off The Record

About

We're a hometown, family-owned record store, selling new & used CDs, LPs, DVDs and stereo gear. We purchased the store in October 2014.

Description

We're all about creating a culture where the music really matters. A place where high-quality, studio-recorded, new and used recordings of any genre can be found at fair prices. We are dedicated to preserving that piece of Americana known as the hometown independent record store. We are family-owned and operated and have a vested interest in the Yakima Valley music community.

Great selection and friendly staff. Great to support a local business. It's been around for more than 30 years. Check it out if looking for vinyl.
Love the atmosphere! Love that my Aunt and Uncle own/run this business. LOVE that they are bringing live shows in, built a stage, and are doing their best to keep our towns little record store alive!
Realistically should be a 2 star review but given the lack of any other music only store in town it gets the extra star. It's sad to see what has happened to this place. The old shop when it was further down on Summitview was a local institution. All of the workers were very knowledgeable and you could find all kinds of great non-mainstream music. Picked up my very first My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult lp at that location. Now it seems that the main focus is on top 40 music and whichever artist recently died and is currently experiencing a temporary surge in popularity. You can still find the occasional gem but you really, really have to dig. And when you do find it expect to pay between $5-$10 more then you would elsewhere. The workers still seem pretty knowledgeable but you get the feeling that they are ridden pretty hard by management. Expect to be asked if you need help finding anything at least 10 times in a 30 minute shopping experience. It's so frequent that it almost makes you feel like they are expecting you to shoplift and it's their way of keeping an eye on you. I don't know, it just doesn't feel like a record store so much as a cell phone kiosk in the mall. I gripe but at the same time I appreciate that we still at least HAVE a record store in this meth-addled garbage pit we call home.
I missed record stores today so I popped in for a look since I had not been into Off The Record in many years. They have a lot of stuff! Records, cassettes, DVD, Blu-ray, and a BLEEPING STAGE!!! The lady that helped me was very nice and told me about a new rock station that was new in Yakima and told me all about the live shows that were planned. I bought a Freddy King CD because blues is for everybody and Freddy can pick mean string or two if you're feeling a lil down and want someone to play what you're feeling so you can sing it and tap a toe or ten. Great store I highly recommend, even in a digital age it's nice to have your favorite bands to hold in your hands as the music plays.
This is probably the best record shop/cd store in Southcentral/eastern Washington. I'm sure they easily have the top 40 radio fodder, but I was hugely impressed that they had two relatively unknown yet up-and-coming groups Two Gallants and The Heavy, and that the staff knew more about them than I did already. :- The store itself is not huge, but very tidy, clean, and organized. They have a number of listening stations although I didn't try any just then. The staff is very friendly and helpful. On the wall behind the counter is a board where they list all the new releases which is a nice touch. If it's not already clear, this is far from your typical hole in the wall independent record and cd store. I should mention there were at least 5-6 other people shopping there at 2 in the afternoon. Check it out, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Yesterday was my first time going. I felt in love when I saw Elvis Presley vinyl records. I bought my very first Elvis record, the prices aren't that expensive. I'll spent anything on Elvis. I'm coming back for sure.
Its good to see there is a music store to look at the different selections if music but it's bad when you don't get good customer service when the boss is not available. I go during the week when you do get best customer service but not on the weekends.
The best place to buy CDs in Yakima, and anything music related, very laid-back place, friendly staff. If you're looking for music they'll have it they have literally everything, from classic rock to New, from records to CDs and hard to find artists and albums they'll have it I highly recommend
The staff was great, the prices for there special vinyl were off I saw a few copies of Michael Jackson's thriller priced at 100 bucks each and that's way off but they are the only record store in town.
Awesome staff. Fun place to look around. Prices are great. They can even order something for you if they don't have it.
